Despite Internet rumors, folding a piece of paper hamburger-style and sprinkling it with Mrs. Dash will not make it taste any less like trees. Instead, today's deal lets you exchange a printed Groupon for a more savory feast at Park Tavern. For $15, you get $40 worth of pub fare and refreshing drinks at this neighborhood establishment in the heart of Midtown, or use your Groupon toward a day-of admission and drink tickets to one of two events: Shamrock with Yacht Rock Festival (March 6) or Oyster Crawfish Festival (March 27).

Citysearch has named Park Tavern the Best After-Work Bar, Best Budget Date Spot, and Best Rainy-Day Date Spot in the past two years. Park Tavern's menu features classic pub grub done classy alongside fresh sushi. These are the tavern's clear fan favorites, and for good reason—they're charismatic, handsome, and made fresh daily. The bison or beef hamburgers ($6.99–$7.99) get ground and hand-pounded on-site before being served on a hot-out-the-oven bakery roll with homemade condiments. The full sushi bar features a variety of rolls ($5.99–$15.99) made with fine ingredients such as Hawaiian fish delivered fresh daily. Other food options include the mahi-mahi sandwich ($8.99), balsamic grilled-chicken salad with toasted pecans and gorgonzola ($10.99), and Georgia-raised chicken-breast boneless wings ($8.99). Park Tavern also features a kids' menu to feed finicky eaters universally accepted bites from the Play-Doh factory such as PB&J rolls ($5.95) and chicken nuggets ($5.95).

Once the craft beers (brewed both on- and off-site) are factored in with the food, a formidable lineup takes shape that has been known to reconcile archenemies and melt marshmallow men. A smooth, light-bodied Druid Hills Pilsner or a malty, traditional Park Trail Ale (both $4) provides the perfect foreground for spotting the original touches scattered throughout the tavern's renovated historic building, which used to be a stable until the horses decided to run for public office. If feasters don't feel like basting their eyes in Park Tavern's gravy-view of Piedmont Park and the Midtown skyline from the Park Tavern patio, they can either watch the game on one of the tavern's large flat-screen TVs or play Wii with their kids on one of the dedicated screens.

Annals of Alcohol

Recent evidence suggests that humans produced alcohol as early as 10,000 BC, and many ancient cultures have produced signature alcoholic beverages. Here’s a guide to ancient drinking:

  • China, 5,000 BC: Alcohol was used in China to celebrate a variety of important events such as births, conference championships, and the invention of gunpowder.
  • Egypt, 4,000 BC: Ancient Egyptians believed beer was the invention of Osiris, the god of slurring.
  • Northern Europe, 550 BC: Vikings drank mead, a honey alcohol made by crying bees. Vikings would frequently hurt those closest to them to produce the saddest bees.
  • Macedonia, 330 BC: Alexander the Great was known for his drunkenness, though he preferred to be known as "The Inventor Of Smiling."
