A photographic memory is a blessing and a curse: you can remember everything, but you can't change the trial memories to make it so you were the one with the gavel and the wig. Let your memories embellish the past, but capture the truth for your records with today's Groupon for a five-hour digital-photography workshop from Texas Photographic Workshops at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Choose between the following options:

  • For $49, you get admission to the Saturday, February 18 workshop (a $129 value).
  • For $49, you get admission to the Saturday, March 3 workshop (a $129 value).

Texas Photographic Workshops’ experienced photo gurus Doug Box and Randy Kerr impart practical photo skills to curious shutterbugs during seminars held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The hands-on session immerses beginner and intermediate students in the inner workings of their digital cameras, showing them how to manipulate menu settings, f-stops, and shutter speed. The lessons also cultivate artistic development by spending time on what makes a good composition, in addition to strategies for when to use a flash and how to get the family dog to juggle for the camera. Questions are encouraged, and a 90-minute lunch break at noon encourages students to rest their minds, to practice, and to mingle with their peers amid lush garden scenery. After the workshops, pupils can use their new knowledge to practice outside and capture shots of native Texan flora.

Doug Box, author of myriad photography-technique books, is one of 13 Kodak mentors and sits on the board for Professional Photographers of America. His coteacher, Randy Kerr, heads World Photographic, which uses photography as a vehicle for illuminating humanitarian and environmental topics. Both men have been teaching photography classes for years, and can help amateurs take photos that capture piercing looks, toothy smiles, and elusive dodo sightings much more efficiently than papier-mâché sculptures.

Groupon Says

The Groupon Guide to: Motivational Mottos

Whether you're feeling so low that you're down in the dumps or feeling so sensational that you're up in the dumps, you'll feel better after repeating a motivational mantra to yourself. Seek success with these proven maxims:

• "Go for the gold!"
• "Live your best life!"
• "Is that gold from earlier making, like, a 'whirring' noise?"
• "Be the change you want to see!"
• "Dang! That gold is hot to the touch … just like I should be."
• "Everyone who looks at the gold starts bleeding. We have to get rid of it."
• "The pawn-shop owner's dog hissed at the gold and when the owner screamed at us, I noticed his mouth had 100 teeth in it."
• "I told the police, 'The gold burned down my house! It was the gold!' but they wouldn't listen!"
• "Is this what you wanted, gold? To see me reduced to nothing?"
• "I buried the gold in cement at a construction zone, but didn't notice the sign reading 'Future Site of The Center for Hubris Studies.'"
• "Settle for silver."
