A philosopher once called theater “the mask of convention over the face of society in the mirror of the unknown reflecting the rear-view of the sports car of destiny.” Simplify this theory with today’s theatrical Groupon: for $60, you get one ticket to August: Osage County, playing March 31 through May 22 (a $61 value, including fees), and one ticket to Hairspray, playing June 23 through August 28 (a $61 value, including fees) at Zach Theatre's Kleberg Stage. This deal is valid for performances on Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis; call or visit the box office by March 25, 2011 to reserve seats.

Now in its 78th season, Zach Theatre has engaged audiences with their innovative theatrical productions since 1933. Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning play, August: Osage County, is the darkly comic saga of the Weston family, who all must endure an unbearably tense reunion at the home of their pill-addicted, venom-tongued matriarch after her husband vanishes. Tempers flair and cataclysmic family secrets are unearthed, such as which insidious cousin stocked the cookie jar with SnackWells. Audiences can recover from the emotional wallop of August: Osage County by tapping their feet and bobbing their beehives to Hairspray, the musical adaptation of John Waters' campy cinematic milestone of the same name, directed by Zach Theatre's artistic director, Dave Steakley. Winner of the 2003 Tony Award for Best Musical, Hairspray follows charismatic Tracy Turnblad as she shoots for stardom and combats racial segregation in 1960s Baltimore.

Featuring two intimate, state-of-the-art stages, Zach Theatre hosts imaginative performances created by playwrights both locally and internationally acclaimed. Cutting-edge acoustics, high-quality light and sound systems, and ample seating unblemished by used gum-chews all work together to create a rewarding theater experience.

Reviews

The Austin Chronicle named Zach Theatre the Best Performing Arts Space in Austin in 2007 and 2006. Austin360.com and the Austin Chronicle both reviewed Zach Theatre's recent production of Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins. Twenty-four Yelpers give the theater a four-star average, and it has more than 6,500 Facebook fans.

  • Somehow, Zach manages to bring in the right combination of interesting and edgy as well as fun classics to make for a well-balanced theater experience. – Jim R., Yelp, 7/28/10

The Groupon Guide to: Enjoying Parties

If you're unfortunate enough to receive an invitation to a get-together, don't go out chopping firewood, lighting a fire, and then dramatically throwing your invitation into the garbage next to the fireplace. Instead, follow these handy party-attendance tips:

  • Show up fashionably late—approximately 15 minutes after enough coats have been collected on the host's bed for you to hide under.
  • Bring a small gift, such as a bottle of wine or a newborn baby.
  • Hit the dance floor with as many hammers as you can to prevent dancing.
  • Trade boring small talk for boring regular talk by having no opinion on anything.
