Edmonton Symphony Orchestra/Winspear Centre
Celebrating its 60th season, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra transports listeners into states of auditory delight with programs that showcase the works of symphonic masters. Led by ESO music director William Eddins, Late Night with Bill Eddins combines carefully curated programs with erudite, post-show discussion, enlightening concertgoers with information on the music, composers, and how the orchestra decides who gets to play the triangle. "Romantics" features the ivory-caressing skills of Croatian-American pianist Kemal Gekić, interpreting Fantasia on The Ruins of Athens by the fiery composer Franz Liszt. Keyboard fireworks are bracketed by Richard Strauss' densely textured Don Juan and the adagio from Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony. The program finishes off with Liszt's arrangement of Gioachino Rossini's famous William Tell Overture, letting the orchestra revel in bombastic flourish while an archer shoots apples off each of their heads.
