When setting out to found Aquus, cofounders Julie Abraham, a slave to chronic pain for decades, and Barb Bergmans, the fitness coach who helped free her from it, envisioned a place where individuals could work out without feeling intimidated. They now put this plan in action along with help from a former professional ice-hockey player, who devises wellness plans geared toward individual needs. The team’s progressive approach to personal training includes three tiers—each focused on nutrition and exercise—that build upon the previous stage. In addition to personal training, they captain group classes ranging from Zumba to PiYo.
The varied workouts get underway in two studios. One has maple-wood floors for group classes, yoga, and personal training, and a second studio contains a clattering chorus of free weights. An infrared sauna and juice bar refresh patrons before they return to work or go back to ripping apart a rival’s phonebook collection.
