There may have been a time when Gene & Jude’s’ fame was limited solely to Chicagoans, but in the seventh decade of this iconic hot dog stand’s existence, it appears the secret had been let out. In 2006, Gene & Jude’s was inducted into the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame. In 2011, the magazine Every Day with Rachel Ray named it the best hot dog stand in the country. But those in the know have been lining up for a juicy Chicago-style hot dog topped with mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers, and crispy fresh-cut fries—Gene & Jude’s’ own special touch—since 1946. The no-nonsense hot dog stand has no seating, just a few wall-mounted counters where customers can stand, although diners will be tempted to devour their food before they walk away from the register. And of course, standing by the traditions that have made them famous, they refuse to serve ketchup.
