Every Friday, atop Alpha Brewing Company’s tap-lined bar, sits a giant cask. Called a firkin, the cask is filled each week with a new one-off batch—aptly named Firkin Friday—and left to its most flavorful serving temperature. Indeed, flavorful beers are a cornerstone of the microbrewery, which favors aggressively hoppy ales such as the White IPA fermented with a housemade strain and the BeerMikester IPA. That brew is a collaborative effort between Alpha and Mike Walters, winner of Alpha’s homebrewing contest, which invites victors to use the brewery’s equipment to craft their recipes. Ales rotate weekly. Winning pours are served in Alpha’s taproom, which also accommodates tastings after weekend tours.
