Behind the Deals: Interview Questions

In the effort to shed light on the murky details of Groupon culture, our Editorial Department present another edition of “Behind the Deals”.

Groupon, like any thriving business, owes a tiny portion of its success to its employees. In addition to making prospective staff members prove they can live for a year on nothing but Groupons, the company puts them through a unique interview process. Here are just a few of the questions asked at a typical interview:

5: How would you negotiate a hostage situation while simultaneously promoting Groupon?

9: How many pens can you fit in your mouth?

10: Why do you know that?

24: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What year is it there?

115: Here are some tools. Quickly make a rock so heavy that you yourself cannot lift it.

179: Why have all the cowboys gone?

312: Have you been a ghost this entire time?

539: If you’re so smart, why didn’t you invent Groupon?

1000: Are you still here?

Earthquake Relief Fund

We are saddened to hear of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Japan. In the effort to assist those in need, we’ve created a G-Team campaign to help gather donations during this tragic time.

Through our site, you can give to the International Medical Corps. They are a group of health professionals dedicated to global support and relief, who are dispatching response teams and supplies to mitigate the hardship and suffering that still await the people of Japan and other affected areas around the Pacific.

You can read more about the charity as well as donate at levels of $5, $10, and $25 to the cause HERE.

Groupon is excited to be participating in South by Southwest Interactive this year. We’ve been nominated for a People’s Choice Award, we’ll be holding our 2nd annual Hangover Brunch and participating in panel discussions, and introducing Austin, Texas to @Grouponadas.

Saturday, March 12th 9:30 AM — How Many Rungs?: Social Change and the Engagement Ladder

The G-Team’s Patty Huber speaks in a panel discussion about digital engagement for social change.

Sunday, March 13th 12:30 PMStrange Business: Corporate Creativity That Doesn’t Suck

February Photo Contest Winner!

Since February is the month of romance, it’s fitting that our February photo contest winner used the power of Groupon to pop the question:

Writes the modern day Prince Charming,

“Here’s a picture I took when my fiancée and I bought a coupon for a whale-watching trip AND a trip to Catalina Island. It was amazing! I proposed to her that weekend and it made the day all the more special. Thanks Groupon for the amazing deal we used for our engagement weekend!”

-Phillip N., Satisfied Customer

Congrats you two! For sharing their engagement weekend with Groupon (and one photogenic buffalo), Phillip and his fiancée win $100 Groupon Bucks to spend on more of the best things to do, eat, see and buy in their city. Other impressive shots this month included the world’s strongest woman, this nosy moose and a family of fun.

Ready to become next month’s winner? If your photo has what it takes it will include:

  • Your Groupon redemption in action. Creativity is encouraged!
  • Your voucher. As always, the Groupon voucher MUST be pictured to qualify for the big bucks. Mobile redemptions welcome.

Send your photos to pictures@groupon.com and keep checking our Flickr stream for the latest photo updates.

Until next month,

Behind the Deals: The Groupon Workstations

In a continued effort to spread the word about Groupon culture, our editorial department expands on the topic with another “Behind the Deals” post.

If the body is a temple, then the desk is the corn field that sits just outside the temple, and the boss is the sun that sits above the corn field that sits outside the temple, which is the body. Here are some of the things found in every Groupon cornfield.

ComputerCluster: A single computer might be able to contain the creativity of an ordinary employee, but a Groupon employee needs more creative space. That’s why he gets two computers, tied together with Ethernet cables for twice the connectivity.

Automated Authorization Automaton: Security is more important now than ever, and Groupon does its best to make sure its employees feel safe. That’s why it’s installed the Automated Authorization Automaton (AAA). Every two hours, this adorable little robot takes a blood sample from each employee—this ensures the employee is still at his desk and hasn’t replaced himself with a grizzly bear.

A stapler: It also works as a paperweight.

Motivational Communicator: Groupon understands that people sometimes feel down, in the dumps, sad, or discouraged. To keep employees motivated, Groupon reminds them who pays their bills by equipping every workstation with tiny, invisible speakers that repeat the word “Groupon” in a soothing voice throughout business hours and well into night.

Mini Donut Maker

To thank Robin F. of Rochester, NY for purchasing yesterday’s Daily Deal we’re sending her a Mini Donut Maker.  No kitchen is complete until you have an appliance that bakes half a dozen donuts in four minutes.

As press interest in Groupon has grown, I’ve found myself increasingly uttering two words that have always annoyed me: “no comment.” We like to be as transparent with our customers as possible, but, just as people don’t walk around naked, there are some things that we as a company don’t talk about (for obvious reasons).

The least we can do is be transparent about the things we won’t be transparent about, which are listed below:

  • Plans relating to capital-raising, including a possible public offering
  • Pre-announcements of new products
  • Our competitors or the competitive landscape
  • Statements on core business metrics, including margins or profitability
  • Any projections regarding revenue, growth rates or other financial metrics
  • Strategic transactions or partnerships with other companies

While we’ll clam up when asked about the above business-y stuff, we’ll always be straight forward about things that affect the experience we’re creating for customers and merchants.

Mystery Date

Congratulations Kathleen M. of Montgomery Village, MD! To thank you for purchasing yesterday’s Daily Deal we’re sending her the classic board game Mystery Date. Stroll down memory lane while rolling the dice to see who is behind the mystery door, watch out for the dud!
