Featured Merchant: Gilt Club

Today’s Featured Merchant is Jamie Dunn, owner of Gilt Club in Portland, OR. The Gilt Club offers Portlanders a spot to grab some “home cooked” grub on the weekend, a happy hour cocktail after work, or a late night snack at 1:00 a.m. during a night out with friends. The Gilt Club is a place that caters to your every mood like no other.

After moving to Portland from Chicago, where he previously owned two other restaurants, Jamie was no stranger to the idea of Groupon; he just never thought it could work for Gilt Club.  Now he’s Groupon’s self proclaimed number one fan. Click through to find out why.

Applying to the Right Position

Dustin, one of our recruiters, provides another installment of how to get hired at Groupon by letting you know how not to get hired at Groupon.

Avoid Applying to Multiple Jobs

True story. We’ve had a number of people apply for over 20 jobs at Groupon, and it’s kind of confusing for us, to be honest. We understand that you may not know exactly what you want to do right out of college or if you are exploring a new career path. We even understand that a lot of our job descriptions [cough Software Engineer] can sound very similar to one another. However, what we don’t understand is why you have applied to positions that aren’t related to each other.

Applying to a few different positions in the same field is fine (provided you are qualified for all of them), but it’s weird to see someone that is apparently qualified for Inside Sales, technical Project Manager, Accountant, Corporate Paralegal, and Internal Communications Manager. It’s very difficult for us to figure out what exactly someone wants to do in this scenario.

My suggestion here is to pick 1 or 2 jobs that you are most interested in and qualified for and apply for those. Then, if you get to the phone screen stage, you can speak to the recruiter about the other roles if necessary. A lot of us have our hands in many different areas and can speak on a high level about almost any job, so use that to your advantage..

We all work as a team here, and are constantly passing resumes for people that we may think are qualified for other roles. Trust us to be your ambassador and don’t jeopardize your chances before we even contact you.

Please feel free to comment and share your opinions. The idea of the article is to help applicants get noticed and to give you an idea of what Corporate Recruiters think when we see certain things. If you are qualified for a particular open job, it is our job to do what we can to help you through this process.

Behind the Deals: Unnatural Occurrences

Like all buildings that are more than four years old, Groupon HQ has its share of hauntings. Though many of our more skeptical employees maintain that these are actually scientifically explainable events, such as creaking doors, bursting steam ducts, and angry spirits, many of our more superstitious staff members have documented the following unusual events for public scrutiny:

April 9, 2010: A partially hairless ape, presumed to be some kind of temperate-climate cousin of the yeti, is seen foraging in the cafeteria for discarded Snickers wrappers and pizza crusts. Shaken witnesses are not completely satisfied with the explanation that this was Groupon night-shift web developer Paul Keller, who has already been asked to restrict his shirtless hours to between midnight and 3 a.m.

August 12, 2010: From the 23rd-floor window of Groupon’s editorial department, a glowing spherical object is seen, clearly hovering above the Chicago skyline. At first glance appearing to be stationary, the object’s gradual, almost imperceptible movement took a westward trajectory throughout the course of the day before it disappeared below the horizon, causing the sky to grow dark.

January 25, 2011: A chupacabra happens.

May 19, 2011: Employees report an apparition resembling a translucent tattered sheet with two crescent shaped “eye holes” floating and moaning through the cubicle aisles, pausing only briefly to hand out business cards that read simply, “Ghost.”

Featured Merchant: Shrewsbury Car Wash

Today’s Featured Merchant runs a squeaky clean business. Meet Dino Nicoletta, owner of Shrewsbury Car Wash in Shrewsbury, NJ. Not only will Dino’s friendly staff give you a free car wash on your birthday, they will clean your car inside and out and change your oil while they’re at it.

After receiving a call from Groupon in early 2011, Dino was intrigued. He had tried various marketing tactics, but was looking for a way to differentiate his car wash from similar nearby businesses.

Writes Mom, Julie:

Here’s a photo of my daughter Katy with her ‘Gimme A Cupcake’ Groupon. We bought them as a birthday treat for her teacher!

Send your shot to pictures@groupon.com and you’re in the running.

As always, keep checking our Flickr page for the latest user uploads, and we’ll see you next month.

About the Deal Counter…

Some people have noticed that we’ve been testing a slightly different “Groupons bought” counter on some of our deals. Instead of showing the exact number of Groupons purchased, the counter is now reduced by a random percentage that will change over time in a way that makes it impossible to see trending by counting the units.

Additionally, we are capping and rounding the counter from time to time. We now precede the Groupon count with the word “over” to reflect that the actual number is always actually larger than what’s being displayed.

So, why all the ambiguity? As customers, we like the counter because it indicates how popular deals are. But some clever people are using the counter to make (consistently incorrect) estimates of our total company sales, which we don’t like for the same reason you probably wouldn’t like if people tried to guess your weight all day. This change is meant to continue to reflect deal popularity while making it clearly impossible to predict our sales. We’re blogging about it to be transparent about our lack of transparency.

We began testing the new counter toward the end of September, and we expect it to be enabled for all deals within a few weeks.

Featured Merchant: Massacre Haunted House

Fall is always a special time of year. The weather is starting to change, the leaves are turning color and people dress up like the dead and try to give you a heart attack.

For one Groupon merchant, it’s his favorite time of the year. Groupon is proud to be working with Ryan Burke, owner of Massacre Haunted House, for the second year in a row. Groupon users can get their yearly Halloween haunted thrill for just $17, half the usual price of a VIP ticket that lets you skip those pesky lines. Check out the deal here.

Ryan told us that Groupon is a great marketing tool for him because “it brings in a ton of new people that otherwise may have gone someplace else. We’re thrilled to work with Groupon every year and haven’t found anything nearly as effective at reaching potential customers.”

While we don’t normally offer experiences that are meant to make you scream in horror, we think you’ll enjoy this…but only once a year.

G-Team Update: Hand2Paw

Puppies wield a special power over humans. They can teach us kindness, responsibility, and how to win a hand of poker. We received an update from Rachel Cohen, CEO/Founder of Hand2Paw, about our  G-Team campaign we recently ran with them. Hand2Paw connects teenagers who are emerging from homelessness with volunteer opportunities at local animal shelters, selecting especially dedicated volunteers for six-week paid internships.

We were happy to hear this news from Rachel:

With Groupon’s help, we were able to have three interns this summer–with money to spare for a few extra later this fall! Two of them now have paid jobs in the animal care industry with two partner businesses in the community. One works at a pet department store and one works at a local doggie daycare. They’re both doing extremely well at their new jobs and we’d like to thank Groupon for helping these kids get back on their feet.

In addition to building a connection with the social services they require to help them transition into independent adult life, Hand2Paw interns also receive guidance from mentors, a transportation stipend, and job training in one of a number of specialty areas such as kennel attendance, dog training, grooming, and assistance in the veterinary or surgical clinics.

You can read more about this organization’s efforts in a recent interview with Rachel in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Have a charity you’d like to see featured? Our G-Team continues to expand to more cities. You can find out more about them and submit your non-profit’s information HERE.
