Groupon Acquires Pelago

Here’s a great way to start the week… We’re excited to announce that the minds at Pelago (creators of Whrrl) have officially joined the Groupon family.

We’ve always liked CEO Jeff Holden, the Whrrl team and the technology they’ve developed. Their obsession with real-world serendipitous discovery, or “Anti-Search,” is core to Groupon’s mission. It’s about discovering what you didn’t know you didn’t know, right in your own backyard. Jeff intimately gets consumer buying behavior and the importance of a great user experience, and his team is this awesome combination of data-driven creatives…the people who create smart products that are really fun to use.

With Jeff overseeing Groupon product development and many Pelago people taking integral roles in future Grouponnovations, Whrrl will be retiring on April 30, 2011. You can read more about that on Pelago’s blog, here.

So here’s a warm welcome to Jeff and the team!

Excellent. I love Groupon but I’m not interested in skin peels and lipo. I’m more a trampoline, skydiving kind-a-guy. Bring the real world serendipity on!

I thin it is fascinating and aligns a great networking opportunity that could counteract Facebook’s objective to try and beat Groupon at the game it brought to the table.

Pretty exciting news! I look forward to seeing how it may be integrated and possibly used (or aspects of it).

It’ll be like chocolate and peanut butter. Or maybe peas and carrots depending on your dietary restrictions. Congrats to both. There’s some interesting possibilities in this joint.

Well I don’t know much about Whrrl but if it enhances Groupon, then I am all for it. I just love Groupon! I have tried new products/companies and loved some and hated others, but that is the beauty of the Groupon deal. Keep up the good work and I look forward to whatever you have in store for us in the future. I am a loyal fan!

I guess I’m just odd? I’m not happy that Whrrl is going away :(

I have never been a huge fan of Groupon and think that Whrrl is a different animal entirely. I guess these days it’s not about creating a company and making it the best it can be and keeping it around for loyal customers and users—it’s about making it popular enough to get bought out by a bigger company.

    C’est la vie
