Groupon Launches ‘Groupöupon,’ Invitation-Only, Private Online Retailer (Press Release)

CHICAGO — Since its launch in November 2008, Groupon has successfully harnessed the collective buying power of millions of subscribers to offer unbeatable local deals. Now, in a surprising inversion of their model, they will shepherd the individual buying power of the elite few. Presenting Groupöupon, an invitation-only, private sales site offering designer apparel and accessories to the consumer elite. “We’ve always loved private sale sites, but felt that they weren’t delivering pure luxury,” says Groupon founder Andrew Mason. “By virtually eliminating utility from our products and selling them at increased prices, we have achieved the theoretical maximum in extravagance.”

Groupöupon is a one-stop destination for those who deserve, and can afford, the finer things. “We’re determined to keep it exclusive,” said Mason. Groupöupon membership will initially be offered to a select few who meet rigorous criteria, gaining them access to a rotating collection of meticulously curated, high-end items. Many of these are items available for sale in the United States for the first time.

When asked about other private sale sites, Mason is quick to point out their key point of differentiation: “Our products are more successful at shedding the bore of function, and thus more luxurious.” Groupöupon’s debut offerings include Premium Sleeves by Fourth World, crowns, and water-scented fragrance. “Other than that, we’re exactly the same. Why create something new when you can knock something off that works?,” Mason said.

Oh my gosh I almost died. My favorite part must have been the copy written for “Presence” and the myriad of options under the application for Title. -M.
