What’s more fun than buying the daily Groupon (and less fun than watching people fall down)? That’s right – sharing Groupons. Maybe you share because you’re looking for people to help you use a Groupon. Maybe it’s because you need to share in order to reach the minimum required for the deal. Or maybe you’re just a nice person and want to help friends get deals on stuff they love.
Today we added one more great reason to share – for every new customer you bring to Groupon, we’ll give you $10 in Groupon Bucks when they buy their first deal. It’s our way of saying “thanks” for your help spreading the word and increasing our collective buying power!
How to Earn Groupon Bucks
Once you create a Groupon account (if you’ve already bought something, you have one), find your personal referral link by clicking Refer Friends, Get $10 at the top of the page.

From here, you can post your link to Twitter, Facebook, or email, or just Cher (pun intended – intended with extreme prejudice) your personal link. Wrap that link around a Groupon badge, and put Groupon on your blog or social networking profile to keep Groupon Bucks flowing!

The “Share” links attached to each deal will also earn you Groupon Bucks. Whether a customer buys that deal immediately or subscribes to the daily email and doesn’t get their first Groupon for months, we won’t forget – you’ll still get your Groupon Bucks.
This was a frequently requested feature – we’re excited to see what you think!

Would be awesome if the referral links actually linked back to the referrer’s city. It’s confusing for people when they use a referral link and they all get directed to Atlanta.

Hey Morgan,
We thought about that, and reasoned (wrongly?) that the person clicking would be better off landing on the city nearest to them, not necessarily the city of the person who made the referral. If I refer my friend in Boston, and I’m in Chicago, they’d be more interested in Groupon Boston – or so our reasoning went. So what we do is geo locate the person clicking the link and land them on the nearest Groupon city.

Yeah, that just doesn’t seem to work. Everyone in Nashville is complaining about being sent to the Atlanta page when they click on my referral link. Ah, technology!

Morgan,
We found the source of the issue in Nashville and fixed it. Turned out to be an incorrect geo-coding. Sorry about that – all cured now. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hmmm. I have someone sitting right next to me, here in L.A., but my referral link keeps landing her at the Tulsa page (and with no mention of me referring/thinking she’d like the deal). HowWhatHelp?

It would be great if I could get just $1 Groupon Buck (or something) for referring a friend to a deal- even when that friend is already a member. Anything to reward me for getting people to buy a deal!

Is there a way to track referrals?

I know (not getting cred for referral) – I just got a friend to sign up and he def. bought something last week and I never got the $10 credit. Hmmmmpppfff. Did he do it wrong? Can I get credit now?

Same as Erin, I also referred 2 friends to join Groupon the first time and they bought the first Groupon immediately and I never received the 2 $10 referral credit. I sent an email to complain and they said my friends may have forgot to click the referral link. No way… i made sure they did. Scam.

I just had a friend click on the referral link and she bought a Groupon but I didn’t get any notice about $10 referral credit either…???
We should be able to track our referrals somehow!

I also haven’t received my $10 Groupon referral credit, and I am certain that we did everything right. I was on the phone with that person while they clicked on the link I sent them, signed up, and purchased the groupon. As far as I can tell, we did everything right. How do I receive the credit? I can show the timestamp of the email with which I sent my friend the link, and I can also send the email he received with confirmation of signing up and purchasing the groupon.
It would be great if you guys could detail step-by-step instructions on how to get your credit since this seems to be a problem with a lot of people.

has anyone notice they have not answered this question yet? Did I miss something? SOMEONE needs to attend to this question of groupon credit for successful referals.

Before I start referring friends, I have some questions about how I can spend the rewards money. If I refer 1 friend, can I break up the $10 between 2 different Groupons (use $5 on today’s deal and $5 on tomorrow’s)? If the Groupon is worth $20 and I only have the $10, can I put the $10 towards it and pay the other $10 with a credit card?

I also referred and didn’t get the $10. I sat next to them to be sure they followed the rules, which were “click on my unique link, within 72 hours, and buy something.” Still waiting to see what you have to say Groupon, since you answered so quickly to technical problems, but not this apparent scam. People are going to stop referring, and you won’t get the desired effect, of a huge buzz.

Also have not received my $10 credit. I was sitting with the person I referred as we set it up, based on my own link that I emailed to that person. My referral purchased something the next day, and I’m still waiting for the credit to show up… It’s been a month now.

Has anyone sent an email about this to Groupon? Did you get a reply? I just sent one and I hope to get a response back.

I also referred a friend. I watched him click my link, sign up and buy a Groupon. He did not have a groupon account prior to that.
I also did NOT receive my $10 referral credit. I contacted support, but they just sent me a response that made it clear they didn’t even read my email. They said maybe my friend didn’t click on the link, or maybe he hasn’t bought anything.
SERIOUSLY?
I can’t believe this. I wonder how many referral credits I haven’t gotten because of Groupon’s referral scam.

Yeah, it’s pretty much a sham the refferal system at Groupon, makes you think twice before using the rest of the service anyway.

Same here on the referrals with no groupon bucks even though I had two of my friends followed the link I sent to them….
