Unlike animal resorts that have subpar turn-down service and overpriced treats in the mini-fridge, The Pet School and Hotel accommodates your pet in a cage-free climate-controlled area. Each windowed room is sectioned off by solid walls, which prevent star-crossed guests from getting lost in one another's puppy-dog eyes.
Amid the lush hush of surrounding woods, Treats Pet Resort boards canine and feline guests, pampering them with modern amenities and 24-hour care. Check pooches into a suite for a two-day play date involving naps in toddler- and twin-sized beds. Leisurely television viewing keeps critters occupied on rainy days, and ceiling fans whirl above to cool chic kitties who refuse to remove their fur coats during their relaxing weekend stay. Large outdoor patios connected by pet doors let furry friends roam freely, and loving hands lead unlimited playtime and long walks along imaginary beaches.

The pet-care professionals at PetSuites coddle pups with accommodation in individual doggie daycare suites and tidy unwieldy manes with a slew of canine grooming packages. During the bath-and-brush package ($24–$59, depending on dog size and breed), staff suds up pooch tresses with shampoo and conditioner before an aromatherapy body spray stimulates wet noses with fragrant essences of fire hydrant and helpless mailman. After nails are trimmed and ears cleaned, staff members ease tense shoulders and hindquarters with a gentle-touch massage and tie on a bow or bandana.
During one-on-one grooming appointments, technicians bathe dogs or cats and give them a custom fur trim and blow dry. Additional enhancements include nail polish, teeth cleaning, and de-shedding treatments.
At House Vets for House Pets, Dr. Kamaria Catalan and her team of veterinary assistants keep tails wagging happily with comprehensive preventive treatments and medical procedures. With the same care used during surgeries and acupuncture sessions, Dr. Catalan and her team coddle their guests in climate-controlled boarding facilities. Furry visitors frequently visit House Vets for House Pets for daycare or extended visits, romping freely around indoor and outdoor play spaces under the watchful eye of staff members who don’t believe in “cage time.” The staff members also groom critters in their in-house salon and make house calls so that animals can be treated in a familiar and comfortable environment without having to miss the live sitcoms performed by neighboring squirrels.
Pam Graham's devotion to horses spans more than 30 years, of which she spent more than a decade as a full-time groomer for some of the nation's premier trainers. Leveraging her experience in breeding and foaling, Pam keeps horses in good health and fine spirits by caring for them in the familiar confines of their home stables. In addition to caring for the horses of other owners, she's lovingly maintained her herd for more than 20 human years, which translates to about 4 horse years or one one-thousandth of a horsefly year.
For grooming—a skill that Pam teaches on the side at her own clinics—she wields curry, mitt, and rake brushes, each of which contains bristles of a varied thickness to thoroughly soften and shine coats. And when she horse sits, Pam leaves her beauty kit at home and makes one or two visits each day to replenish food and water, deliver supplements, and perform a visual once-over before reporting to owners via phone or email.
Aided by a staff of animal lovers who have spent countless hours at rescue organizations, Dr. Kerry Garrity keeps pets healthy by providing a range of veterinary services. Dr. Garrity and her team administer yearly vaccines, examine fractures with the help of digital radiographs, and tend to older pets with specialized geriatric services. They also nurture overweight dogs with Royal Canin Veterinary Diets and counsel new owners on pet-care strategies, such as letting one’s canine fetch the paper only after removing the funny pages. After appointments, clients can treat their dogs and cats to accessories from the pet boutique, such as knit-fish cat toys, fleece pet sleeping bags, bowls, and treats.
Happy Hounds' firm no-leash policy lets dogs bound around play spaces unfettered, taking full advantage of the fully insured company's 3,000-square-foot facility. Dogs get exercise outdoors and indoors, climbing over and through agility obstacles as attentive staff members look on. Much like elementary-school students or new employees, dogs are separated into playgroups according to temperament, play style, and knowledge of multiplication tables. These like-minded dogs also bunk down together in slumber-party-style sleeping areas, where they snooze on fleece bedding, drift off to classical music, or stay up late playing truth or dare, their safety ensured by around-the-clock staff.
Tucked away on the owner's 25-acre farm just outside Louisville, Utopia Animal Care welcomes dogs of all breeds and sizes to a loving home away from home. During daycare stays or slumber parties, pups can be found romping about the 2-acre, fully fenced outdoor play yard or snuggled inside the cage-free facility, where each canine suite is outfitted with organic snacks, fresh water, and cable TV. To restore that new-dog smell, Utopia's licensed groomer manages manes of all textures and lengths with breed-specific cuts and brush outs and helps pups to unwind from long hours dreaming of chasing squirrels with canine massage.
Phyllis P. Allen and Victoria Martin have mad shampooing and blow-drying skills. But they aren’t working their magic on human heads. Instead, the owners of Pet Paw's have set out to prove that dog washing doesn’t have to be a pain, welcoming pet owners into a spacious grooming studio stocked with everything they need to get Fido clean quickly, calmly, and without cash bribes.
Each deluxe doggie bathing station features a raised tub that dogs can easily scramble into via a special staircase, and gentle restraints keep each pooch in a stable position during the duration of the scrub-down. Customers can don aprons to protect outfits from sudsy splashes, created from three varieties of natural earthbath shampoo blended with ingredients such as aloe and tea tree oil to leave coats fragrant and shiny. After the last rinse, towels and special air-blowers dry off fur, as special perfumes replace that wet-dog smell with something more snout friendly. Treats reward each well-behaved customer and the staff will clean up all the mess left behind, freeing each chic pup to focus on more important tasks such as showing off at the dog park or attending modeling go-sees.
The pet specialists at Pet Paw's can also help busy or apprehensive pet owners by giving dogs professional grooming services upon request.
Clark Clouse's father, Tommie, worked with horses for more than 40 years while tending his own barn, so it was only natural that Clark too would excel at riding long after his father's retirement. Clark, with more than 20 years of experience training horses, has won more than 35 World Championship titles and was named 'young trainer of the year' in 2007. At Clouse Stables, he and Sheila Clouse board and train American saddlebreds, and they also offer lessons for riders of all experience levels. The riding instructor at the stables, Maryta Montgomery, has been successfully competing in the show ring since 1992. Montgomery received training from some of the best riding instructors in the Saddlebred industry, including instruction from Renee Biggins and Missy Hughes. The stables are situated on ten acres with an indoor arena an outside track.
All day long at Poochies Plus, four-legged friends, separated by size, frolic freely in cage-less indoor and outdoor play areas. Dogs new to the scene meet with a staff member for 20 minutes to discern play style as well as favorite foods. Then, they're shuffled into play lots where they can splash in kiddie pools, gnaw on chew toys, or chase balls tossed by animal-loving staff members. In addition, overnight guests enjoy bedding in their own sleep space so they don't disturb others when rehearsing dramatic soliloquies from Lassie.
