When he's not whipping the youth soccer players of the Portland Timbers into shape, Waterfront Fitness's owner Jason Bell heads to the city’s riverside parks to shape up everyday citizens with rigorous athletic drills. He and his team of qualified instructors convene beneath Portland's sky during all but the coldest months, incinerating calories during one-hour boot camps held every morning and evening. These sessions include activities such as strength circuits, Interval training, games, and box fit, which features high-speed punching drills and cardiovascular throwdowns beneath the boughs of mighty park trees. The trainers also provide general and sport-specific personal training for exercisers in search of an intense, highly personalized regimen to build muscle or burn fat.
When Bill Bradley began teaching martial arts in 1989, the term "MMA" hadn't even entered the lexicon. But whatever he might have called the high-energy blend of striking and grappling, he excelled at it. Today, Bradley shares his expertise at Alive MMA as both owner and instructor.
The facility aims to provide the ideal workout space for martial arts practitioners, combining 3,000 square feet of mat space with an MMA cage, a regulation-sized boxing ring, and 10 heavy bags. Next door, a complete CrossFit gym features practical equipment for ever-changing workouts. But the focus on fitness doesn't exclude comfort—Alive MMA also houses a sauna and therapeutic massage room for post-exercise relaxation and pre-exercise pep talks.
Fierce Fitness's Commit to Be Fit boot camp blasts bodies with high-energy kickboxing workouts, interval training, and a nutritional program to impart a well-rounded fitness plan to participants of all abilities. The six-week athletic adventure begins with an orientation, measurements, and body-composition analysis in which torsos scribe essays on shape shifting. Classes consist of routines that are designed to increase endurance and core strength while sculpting and toning limbs in order to deliver pink slips to stunt doubles.
For the last 14 years, the team of trainers and health coaches at the head of Results Driven Fitness don't just ask their clients to show up to every session, they also ask that they have a great time. Thanks to a range of fitness certifications, they're able to shock clients' bodies into giving up calories through intensive interval-training programs conducted in a fast-paced and entertaining atmosphere as well as therapy and nutritional programs. Blending the core-training elements of boot camp with flexibility-enhancing yoga poses and pulse-pounding MMA instruction, these sessions follow a program designed to mimic the full range of body movements. Sessions also use a veritable playground of quality equipment, such as ropes, tires, and TRX suspension-training rigs.
Kickboxing classes deliver a knee to the face of fat, burning up to 860 calories an hour with the high-energy striking moves of martial arts and boxing. All four limbs get in on the bag-bludgeoning action at iLoveKickboxing as each class provides a full-body workout that tones arm, leg, and tentacle muscles while tightening the body’s core and improving balance. Hitting the heavy bags won't skin your knuckles once you don the included boxing gloves, which also double as excellent spring-loaded props for re-creating Three Stooges gags. Class times and dates vary based on location.

Frustrated with traditional workout regimens that led to injury and strain, Michael Skogg learned about kettlebell exercises while stationed in Scotland with the United States Armed Forces. The system he encountered used cast-iron, cannonball-like weights with handles to facilitate a wide range of exercises
and provide a low-impact, heavily aerobic workout for the entire body. Michael decided to expand upon this regimen when he returned home, relying on his extensive education in sports injury rehabilitation, personal training, and corrective exercise as he devised a system that would help individuals achieve fitness goals.
At Skogg Gym, Michael stocks the facility with kettlebells that weigh between 9 and 106 pounds and leads classes that consist of sequences of swinging and pressing movements. Over time, these high-intensity movements can help attendees improve their strength and endurance, as well as their balance, flexibility, and ability to throw a watermelon into low orbit.
When she began training in the art of Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen, Silvia Smart felt instantly empowered. That was in 1987. Today, as a Goeroe and fifth-degree black belt, Silvia and her husband Jeff, also a fifth-degree black belt, share their wisdom of self-defense at Tulen Center. For more than 25 years now, they have taught students as young as three martial arts and self-defense techniques. Silvia, Jeff, and their fellow instructors always emphasize practical skills–falling properly, for instance, which is an important skill for self-defense situations and re-shingling the roof. The Tulen Center team makes its teachings accessible for all skill levels by maintaining a non-competitive, positive environment.
In her two-plus decades in the fitness industry, master trainer and owner of Miss Fit Adventures Nikki Becker has compiled a pretty impressive resume filled with certifications and specialties. But perhaps her most important attribute is her genuine desire to help others reach their goals.
Using the canyons, mountains, and rivers of the Pacific Northwest as her playground, Nikki along with the Miss Fit Adventures team leads fitness enthusiasts into the wild during rewarding outdoors experiences. The team also leads one-on-one training sessions and fitness classes under the sturdy roof of the Miss Fit studio in Portland, which keeps extraterrestrials from learning too much about human fitness routines.
“We focus on all of our individual students, not just our competitors,” said instructor Jeff Patterson when describing what sets Northwest Fighting Arts apart from other gyms. At Northwest, students can take any of the gym’s classes or customize a package to suit their needs. Instructors specialize in popular martial-arts forms such as muay thai kickboxing, Brazilian jujitsu, and boxing, and they also offer harder-to-find styles such as jeet kune do and kali/eskrima. Though martial-arts classes themselves can provide an intense workout, Northwest Fighting Arts also has strictly fitness classes such as interval training and circuit training.
The black-belt instructors at Way of Life Taekwondo & Fitness Arts lead students ages 3 and older through the crescent kicks, punches, and blocks of traditional and competition tae kwon do. Throughout each class, they emphasize self-confidence, fostering a positive environment where students gain strength and flexibility as well as self-defense techniques. Fully realized fitness buffs, the team instructors also help students roast calories with resistance weights and athletic equipment through Apex Fitness classes.
Lily-Rygh Glen wears many hats. She is a flexibility coach, a yoga teacher, a personal trainer, and the owner of Flexible Fitness. There, her diverse fitness background shows during personal-training sessions. Held at either Loprinizi's Gym or an outside location, a typical session may include weightlifting exercises, Thai massage, yoga, body-weight intervals, and boxing drills such as running around Mike Tyson 10 times fast.
