Included in Rhode Island Monthly's Best of Rhode Island, The Pizza Gourmet accommodates customers with a choice of custom pizzas cooked in-house or raw pies that customers can take home. All pizzas start out as a plate of fresh garlic, olive oil, parmesan, asiago, and italian parsley, but customers can personalize their pies with a multitude of crust, sauce, cheese, and topping options. Although the eatery specializes in pizza, noncircular appetites can be slaked with menu items such as sun-dried tomato pesto penne, italian grinders, and sodas.
The chefs also take their culinary creations out into the world via four theme catering menus, outfitting tailgate parties, corporate breakfasts, and cocktail parties with equal enthusiasm. Food-eaters can customize their catering orders according to dietary needs, as well, including vegan and gluten-free catering options. Inside the restaurant, an exposed-brick accent wall is painted fire-truck red to match the dining room's vivid crimson accents. The walls are covered in a rainbow of handwritten menu options, with entrees, appetizers, salads, and desserts all vying for perfect penmanship awards.
When Gianfranco Marrocco left Italy for America, he had big dreams. But his high hopes for what he’d do with his new life were coupled with nostalgia for the outdoor cafés in his native country. Confident that the people of Providence would also enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere he longed for from back home, he decided to open an authentic Italian caffé. His dream was realized with the opening of Caffe Dolce Vita, situated in the heart of the picturesque DePasquale Plaza on Federal Hill.
Inside Caffe Dolce Vita, warm tones of copper and bronze showcase contemporary Italian style, along with sage-green leather banquettes (fondly referred to by many Americans by their pet name, “booths” or "great hide-and-go-seek spots"). The kitchen team brings out brunch, lunch, and dinner feasts of savory Italian dishes, such as veal parmigiana. Double espressos and cappuccinos perk up guests, along with specialty drinks at the bar, where servers pour popular Italian liqueurs such as Sambuca and Limoncello.
Intricate, sketch-like depictions of vines, porticos, and a rolling Tuscan countryside add rustic dimension to creamy walls, while in other dining rooms, elongated mirrors and a marble bar offer an urban anchor to an environment of grayscale and charcoal. It was this very juxtaposition that Jim Harris and Daniel Teodoro sought when they took ownership of Pizzico Ristorante, an eatery mingling components of northern Italian and American cuisine.
White tablecloths populate with tuscan grilled pizzas, creamy risottos, and seafood and veal sautéed in subtle wine sauces. Four days a week, a local menu board offers meats, seafood, and produce from the farms and oceans of local Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Wine dinners escort guests through multiple courses of cuisine and complementary wine, demonstrating how different flavors can enhance each other's vivacity even if they aren't vinegar and baking soda.
The three co-owners of Geppetto's Grilled Pizzeria pair Italian classics and contemporary cuisine at their picturesque Federal Hill eatery, filling a menu with pasta dishes, buffalo wings, and both grilled and New York–style pizzas. Floor-to-ceiling french doors and wood accents imbue the space with Old-World charm, and a European-style courtyard beckons diners to sup al fresco during the summer months or freak January heat waves. Geppetto's group tours and luncheons steep customers in special prix fixe menus and demonstrations, and cooking classes impart students with the know-how to make their own morsels at dinner parties or when a rogue trillionaire kidnaps all the world's chefs to staff his continent-size kitchen.
At Pearl Restaurant & Lounge, diners might find themselves twirling pasta around forks or trapping sushi rolls between chopsticks. Both eating styles are represented in the eclectic menu, which showcases inventive forays into Italian and Asian cuisines. There's pizzas piled with prosciutto and mesclun greens, raviolis stuffed with lobster, and pan-seared pork dumplings ripe for dipping into a spicy Szechuan sauce. And to model the food, there's also two types of dining atmospheres: a romantic outdoor terrace or elegant blue-lit dining room. Following meals, you need only step into the lounge area for a little nightlife; live music fills the 18,000-square-foot space on Friday and Saturday nights until 2 a.m. with the sounds of jazz, low-key beats, and Muzak renditions of the chicken dance.
McFaddens Restaurant and Saloon combines the warm atmosphere and decadent fare of a family restaurant with the all the rowdy good times of an old-fashioned saloon. In the dining room, the wait staff shuffles around plates of classic fare for both lunch and dinner, including Black Angus burgers, roasted vegetable flatbread pizzas, and slow-roasted prime rib, with a few treats for kids, such as grilled-cheese sandwiches, cheeseburger sliders, and ice-cream pie for dessert. After dark, the bar comes alive with trivia and karaoke on Wednesday nights, supplemented by liquid courage in the form of beer towers and Ciroc ultra-premium vodka. Weekends start on Thursday with a live DJ and wrap up on Sunday with game-day specials during NFL games and professional rock-paper-scissor smack downs.
It’s a good thing that firemen no longer sleep upstairs at Ladder 133
Sports Bar & Grill, as they would surely be awakened by the
boisterous cheers that follow every Red Sox homerun broadcast across the
sports bar’s 18 high-definition TVs. Built in 1902 as the Douglas
Avenue Fire Station, the bar pays homage to its rich history with
antique furnishings and a menu headlined by Firehouse wings that range
from the routine Firefighter to the blazing Deputy Chief. The station’s
original woodwork remains above the bar, and the turn-of-the-century
firefighters’ dressers have been converted into service tables. The bar
itself—a solid mahogany relic of the 1800s—hosts taps for more than 10
draft beers and converts into a hot sauce slip’n’slide after local
Most chefs don’t want to hear about how they should prepare a meal; but at Providence Prime chefs welcome patrons to share how they like their premium steaks to be cooked and served. Located on historic Federal Hill, the steakhouse offers diners a chance to order steaks topped with a blue-cheese or horseradish crust, or smothered in bernaise or hollandaise sauce. Steaks are served with side dishes such as mac-and-cheese or peas and bacon, and options from the sea include crab legs, yellowfin tuna, and fishermen's boots. Desserts such as housemade tiramisu, key lime pie, and vanilla-bean crème brûlée finish out each meal, which can be paired with a selection from a list that offers more than 300 wines.
You would be hard pressed to find a can opener anywhere in the kitchen of Cilantro Mexican Grill. That's because the restaurant's chefs don't need one; they only cook with fresh ingredients. A typical day in their kitchen sees the chefs mashing the nutty flesh of ripe avocados into guacamole, slicing fresh tortillas to be fried and sprinkled with lime juice, and grilling adobo-seasoned chicken, steak, and fresh line-caught Atlantic pollock purchased from local fisherman at the docks of Point Judith, Rhode Island. Local growers get in on the action too, supplying the kitchen with tomatoes and onions. All five locations serve mason jar margaritas and craft beers with the Cranston location finding patrons sipping one of 20+ brews.
From the road, Spirito’s Restaurant looks like a laid-back beach house, with white siding, a gabled roof, and a covered, wraparound porch. But indoors, furnishings such as candle-strewn chandeliers, enormous Persian rugs, and dark wood wall paneling create a more luxurious ambiance. White tablecloths host plates of traditional Italian pasta, grilled pizzas, and fish and veal entrees in subtle wine sauces. Glass stems can globetrot through an international wine list offering more than 20 wines by the glass and another 20 by the bottle. Spirito's also caters events with buffets, to-go trays, and hearty brunch spreads.
Amici Bar & Grille’s menu boasts a selection of pasta, burgers, and brick-oven pizzas that are sure to appease any craving. Accents of lobster, wine, and smoked meats permeate Amici's pastas, while Macho Nachos come smothered in house-made chili, jalapenos, black beans, and tomato salsa. Other appetizers, including fried calamari and buffalo chicken egg rolls, and personal-size pizzas are ideal for nibbling on while watching a game. With 21 high-definition TVs calling Amici home, diners can be entertained indoors when New England rains come or head out to the bright patio when sections of Mars explode.
By setting his restaurant at the less congested end of Atwells Avenue, Ken Turchetta has stayed under the radar in Federal Hill—a status he enjoys because it keeps his restaurant intimate. That’s why even after 12 years in business, it’s common to see him make a stop at every table.
Since the beginning, chef Hector Madrid has been Ken’s go-to artisan for creating authentic Italian dishes from fresh, local ingredients. The resultant spread is impressive: chicken and veal marsala, fish fillets, and rings-only calamari, all easily paired with red or white wine by the bottle or glass.
With recipes that call to mind the towering spires of the Khmer Empire’s antique capital, the chef at Angkor Restaurant recreates modern Cambodia’s favorite dishes. Nam yaa, the restaurant's most popular dish, is also known as medicine soup for the restorative qualities of its lemongrass, ginger, and garlic and the tradition of serving it in a tiny childproof bottle. Distinct Cambodian sauces, such as tamarind and spicy garlic, douse crispy fish, and peanut sauce tops banh hoi, whose steamed noodles are accompanied by lettuce and mint.
Skarr introduces visitors to an exotic culture and tradition with its Lebanese-style menu and Middle Eastern-inspired ambiance. Tangerine-colored walls create a fitting aura amid hookah puffs, which fill the air with fruity traces including bananas foster and raspberry lemonade. Similarly, the cocktails menu features an assortment of sweet elixirs, such as the Godiva Seduction—a blend of Godiva white chocolate liqueur, vanilla vodka, and crème de cacao served in a chocolate-lined glass.
At Minerva's Pizza, you’ll find many of the time-honored favorites you’d expect at a classic neighborhood pizzeria—gooey pizzas speckled with sausage, meaty calzones, and sauce-drenched wings. But, there are also a few surprises on the menu, including whole-wheat pies and an extensive selection of authentic Lebanese dishes. Guests at this cheerful joint perch at front sidewalk tables, washing back crispy falafels, sizzling gyro wraps, and freshly made pizzas with frosty beers.
