For more than 35 years, guests of Courthouse Fitness have conquered every hindrance to personal health, taking advantage of a multilayered approach that addresses fitness, diet, and broader facets of well being. Beyond basic features such as weight training, cardiovascular equipment, and immobile floors that force walking, membership grants access to more than 320 group fitness classes that populate each week's schedule, integrating practices such as Pilates and yoga along with aqua Zumba and Jazzercise. Courthouse Fitness's personal trainers follow the philosophy that being fit means being empowered to embark on any kind of adventure you want. A core tenet within that philosophy is the belief in fun. The staff does not emphasize a rating system or hierarchy, instead evaluating progress in terms of whether clients become more able to experience an enjoyably active life. Onsite childcare providers take care of young ones while parents work out, and many youth activities also keep kids busy, including swimming and special-needs dance classes. Courthouse Fitness is also part of a network of 70 clubs in the Pacific Northwest; members can work out at those facilities as guests when on the road.
A.C. Gilbert's Discovery Village is a hands-on children's museum spread across three historical houses that reside in Riverfront Park. It is named after A.C. Gilbert, a Salem native, toy magnate, and inventor of the Erector Set. True to a life spent creating educational and scientific toys, his namesake museum provides a place for kids to interact with exhibits that encourage play and provoke thought. From a giant model of an animal cell to a faux paleontological dig full of ancient bones to musical instruments like a South American rainwheel, the museum's stations encompass a number of scientific and cultural disciplines—though little ones might only interpret each activity as fun. Furthermore, youth can heal stuffed animals in the Village Vet Room or scale a 52-foot edifice that is one of the world's largest Erector Set towers, boasting three slides, and a maze.
The sparkle of coal is a common sight in mineshafts, but no minerals have ever been found in Warpaint International's mineshaft. Instead, the splatter of fired paintballs covers the walls, just as it does in the newly renovated, 20,000-square-foot arena's other three play zones. Within the exciting facility, competitors can navigate the small homes of an indoor shantytown and crouch behind stacked barrels in an otherwise sparse mock-hotel.
JT SplatMaster Paintball offers a gentler version of paintball for younger players who have outgrown Extreme Contact Face Painting. And Warpaint International has partnered with Sniperz Den Paintball in St. Paul to host once-a-month events on more than 50 acres ripe for play, including seven bases replete with flags. Players can also stop by the full pro shop to stock up on markers, paintballs, and other related apparel.
The Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill preserves slices of valley history by word and deed, keeping up 14 historic structures and filling them with historical tours and living history displays. The Jason Lee house represents the oldest building on campus, built in 1841. The structure also boasts the title of oldest surviving wooden frame house in the Pacific Northwest, and its interior sports the period appropriate furnishings right down to an iron stove and a snoring, bonneted grandmother. Nearby stands the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, and piece of the Industrial Revolution that has survived since 1896, earning recognition as an American Treasure by the National Park Service. Workers keep the buildings clean and sound for tours and rentals, while actors keep the ground vibrant with living historical portrayals.
Staffed entirely by DMV–certified instructors, Oregon Driver Education Center has been filling potholes in the knowledge of novice and experienced drivers since 1987. The center's masters of the open road send teens and adults on the path to earning their driver's licenses and maintaining clean driving records with comprehensive DMV drive test prep courses and defense driving classes. With an intimate understanding of the unique challenges facing Oregonian motorists, ODEC also offers an Xtreme Driver Control course that focuses on navigating vehicles through rain, ice, and throngs of rabid snowmen. Additionally, the center's specialty courses teach precautionary practices to medically at-risk drivers.
Elsinore Gallery owners Steve and Barbara Narkaus preserve all varieties of memento within more than 200 types of frames. Alongside stock and custom frames of wood, metal, and lacquer, hundreds of matting options give dimension to encased diplomas, family portraits, or parking tickets. Frames in sizes 24"x30" or 24"x36" preserve larger items, such as a movie poster or a member of the rebel forces frozen in carbonite. The husband-and-wife pair also stocks the shop's gallery with the works of local artists, including Barbara's own golf-theme artwork, which grants everlasting views of the scenic golf courses in the Pacific Northwest.
Under the high ceilings of a warehouse dating back to the 1970s, the Salem Fencing Club team leads training sessions and competitions for its members and guests. A nonprofit organization, Salem Fencing Club aims to share the honor, chivalry, and respect integral to this historic sport with its community. To that end, they provide classes for various skill levels and organize children's day camps, filling them with lessons, crafts, games, and campfires, during which students are trained to fight the urge to toast marshmallows on their épées. Though the facility is decades old, the sparring space has been updated to include virtual scoring and overhead reel-less systems.
Built on a former dairy farm in 1969, the executive course at Meadowlawn incorporates a compact game of nine holes into residential Arcadia. Four par 3 holes help players develop their short game amid hazards such as a creek, lake, and sand bunkers newly renovated with tiny camels and to-scale mirages. The course also features five par 4s for diverse play while still maintaining a scaled-down layout that ensures a quick round, allowing players to get in enough play. After rounds, the onsite Upper Deck Grill refuels and rejuvenates golfers with a menu of salads, sandwiches, and grill fare.
Presented by Courthouse Fitness, Salem Health and Salem Electric, Tri4Kids’s youth triathlon accommodates different ages and fitness levels with twin courses—one long and one shorter. To cater to youngster’s smaller proportions, neither course reaches full-blown triathlon scale. However, both still challenge kids to swim, run and bike vigorously, unlike lax triathlons that only require participants to shower, walk, and hold a bike upright.
Indigo Wellness Center's professional ligament-looseners shepherd students of all skill levels through yoga classes designed to bolster the body and mind. In addition to traditional Hatha and Vinyasa yoga courses, the schedule of 90-minute classes also includes Adaptive Yoga, an Iyengar-based class relying on props, and Gentle Yoga, an easygoing session geared towards every age and body type. Take an afternoon break from office work or robot husbandry with the quick and restorative Lunch Box Yoga, or commence weekends with a cocktail of fitness and mental tranquility in Happy Hour Yoga. If your muscles are shy, then warm them up slowly in a four-class beginner yoga fundamentals workshop. Indigo Wellness Center's helpful staff assists experienced yogis and namaste-newbies alike in determining which class and instructor would fit them best.
West Fest 2011, an outdoor music festival nestled in Wallace Marine Park, entertains concertgoers with a brimming lineup of classic and contemporary rock performers. Headlining musician Chuck Prophet—known for recording alongside Warren Zevon, sharing stage space with Lucinda Williams, and living up to his last name by predicting future events—takes the stage at 8 p.m. with his band The Mission Express. Session guitarist Jeff Pevar from David Crosby side-project CPR opens the night at 6:30 p.m. with a solo performance and three-handed ventriloquist-dummy quartet.
The muscle tutors at Fitness Together will work with you to determine your goals (drop pounds, run a marathon, get strong enough to finally confront Douglas) and develop a customized workout plan designed to help you reach your true fitness potential. They’ll supervise your squats, offer nutritional advice, and push you until you see results. Individualized attention means it’s all about you—your trainer can point out when you’re doing a stretch incorrectly, help you tone the trouble zones, and push you to keep going when you’d otherwise quit or become distracted by the fragile beauty of a passing hummingbird.
Historic Deepwood Estate's 1894 Queen Anne home rests its gables amid approximately 4 acres of lush gardens and nature trails, fascinating visitors with its Victorian-era architectural features and insightful exhibits. The Cherry Jubilee benefit dinner kicks off at 6 p.m. with a cocktail party and a silent auction, where revelers can raise hands, paddles, or 20-foot oars to bid on myriad prizes, including a one-week getaway at Eagle Crest Resort, golf outings, and spa packages. The estate’s intricately designed gardens will play host to the evening's cherry-themed four-course dinner, which commences with a spinach, almond, cherry, and manchego cheese salad and culminates with delectable desserts, such as cherry tarts and italian panna cotta luxuriating in a cherry-infused sea. Live music by JT & The Tourists revives the poodle-skirt sounds of the ’50s and ’60s, specially remixed to conscript shoes into bobby-soxing dance armies. Proceeds from the Cherry Jubilee dinner and silent auction benefit the Friends of Deepwood and their quest for historic preservation.
