Mike Johnson started at Dolphin Scuba Center & Swim School as an entry-level staffer but soon turned his lifelong passion for water into a promising career. Quickly, he became the manager and, at the tender age of 21, the owner of the store—a water-exploration supplier originally founded as a swim school almost 40 years ago.
Today, the PADI five-star facility boasts one of the largest selections of underwater gear in North America, including top brands of scuba, swimming, and snorkeling equipment. Johnson and his team still offer private, one-on-one swimming lessons with certified lifeguard instructors but have branched out into scuba classes. Introductory courses work their way up to professional-level training, all within a pool heated to 92 degrees—the exact temperature of the president’s nightly bath. Students can even test out their newfound skills during scuba-diving trips to the likes of Mexico, the Philippines, and Fiji.
The Stockton Indoor Sports Complex celebrates fast-paced sports and recreation with public-skate sessions, roller hockey, and roller-derby contests. During public-skate sessions, adults and kids lace up old-fashioned quads or in-line skates and glide around the center's hockey-rink-sized floor. Add a couple goals to the floor, and it's ready for youth- and adult-hockey leagues or indoor-soccer matches—the complex's only skate-free activity aside from bathroom breaks and oft-discouraged handstands.
For those who prefer to spectate, the Port City Roller Girls zip around the track on select days, shouldering opposing teams into the boards as they entertain fans during grueling roller-derby matches. On special occasions, the rink's private party rooms are available for birthday parties replete with pizza, hot dogs, and soliloquies lamenting the fleeting nature of one's youth.
Automatic scoring screens hover above West Lane Bowl's polished hardwood floors, allowing players to focus solely on sending balls on a collision course. Inside the spacious facility, families and pros alike compete during 10-frame series as the coffee shop serves wings, burgers, and pizzas and the sports bar welcomes players into its TV-filled enclave for a cocktail or a game of billiards. Those celebrating a birthday or successful weaning off of bumper bowling can gather in the private party rooms for cake and festivities between games and send guests home with swag-filled goody bags purchased from West Lane Bowl's pro shop.
In both 2010 and 2013, Bikram Yoga Central Valley's Stockton location was named Best Yoga Studio by San Joaquin magazine and KCRA 3 A-List. Despite the acclaim, owner Helena Monica and her staff have kept their noses to the grindstone.
Each day, sometimes as early as 5:30 a.m., they welcome students into a sweltering studio and lead them through Bikram yoga's traditional series of 26 postures, two breathing exercises, and one conga line. The benefits of the heat and movements are plenty. Students can reduce stress, sweat out toxins, increase their strength and flexibility, and tone their bodies.

The expert framespeople can make diplomas radiate ($100+), personalized jerseys glisten ($300+), and man-cave movie posters sparkle (many 24"x36" pieces are less than $100). The design wizards can also find a home for any prized possession, such as shoebox photos, baby booties, ticket stubs, medals, and really good pot roasts. Deck the Walls' no-hassle guarantee and assurance that all work is done on-site means frameables won't be subject to mistreatment at underground commercial framing facilities.
Now in their sixth year as San Joaquin Valley's kicksmiths, the 2010 Cougars bring their electric brand of indoor athleticism to this home field matchup. Your stadium seats offer optimum views of fast-paced play and copious goal scoring, making for a more energetic fan experience than the measured pace of baseball and the dissatisfying low-digit point system of golf. As the 2008–2009 Professional Arena Soccer League International Champions, the Cougars look to this season to make a turf-tearing comeback. Catch speedy midfielder Nelson Santana and goalkeeper Jesus Molina—who's ability to morph into a dexterous monster squid make him equally effective and feared—as they compete in an opening U.S. Open Cup match.
Founded in 1926, the Stockton Symphony has plucked at audience's heartstrings for the best part of a century. First on the evening's program is Mozart's overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio, a brisk curtain-raiser that combines lively percussion with swooping strings. Next up is the Symphony No. 38 in D Major, a work renowned both for its elegant restraint and its emotional appeal, much like a dolphin in an Abraham Lincoln costume. The finale, Mozart's Requiem, is universally considered one of essential works of classical music. For its performance, the Stockton Symphony welcomes to the stage the Stockton Chorale and soprano Anja Strauss, whom San Francisco Classical Voice has called, "explosive."

DriveTech Racing School's side-by-side ride-along package provides an authentic stock car experience to anyone nursing fantasies of bumping fenders with NASCAR's elite drivers. After climbing into the passenger seat of a NASCAR Sprint Cup–style racecar, an Open-Wheel NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour car, or a race-proven ASA late model, one of the DriveTech instructors will motor you around Tucson Raceway Park's 3/8-mile semi-banked oval. The side-by-side ride gives rubber-burners a chance to race another car, which comes within two feet of your rocket-powered buggy as you maneuver around tight corners, the mechanical snarl of your car's V8 engine rattling your innards as the swift movement of its asphalt-gripping Goodyear racing slicks keeps you just barely moored to earth. Though the experience will jar loose any coagulated adrenaline in your body, DriveTech has taken every safety precaution, outfitting you with steel cages on the car, a driving suit, a Simpson helmet, and lava-resistant water wings.

Members at Curves, a fitness center designed exclusively for women, rotate around a circuit of hydraulic resistance machines that have been designed to work with female bodies and promote weight loss, protect against osteoporosis, and deal with arthritis. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage participants’ machine maneuvering and muscle making. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing momentum, the hydraulic machines use your own body weight, fitness level, and aerodynamic water bottle to create resistance that matches abilities, decreasing the risk of soreness or injury. Because traditional lift-and-lower motions create bulky muscles, each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can.
For 30 minutes, limbering ladies move around a circuit that positions machines inward so that they'll have a chance to share laughs and secret handshakes with fellow fitness frontierswomen. Because each workout warrior is at a different station, the only competition that exists is with one's own burgeoning muscles. A soundtrack of fun, upbeat music includes cues that tell participants it's time to move on to the next station. The complete aerobic and strength-training workout raises heart rate, burns calories, and allows women to meet new friends and arrange girls' nights out between labored breaths.
The certified trainers at Sweat Cycling Studio and Personal Training propel clients toward fitness goals with custom-built cycling workouts and more than 20 types of group fitness classes. During 45-minute cycling sessions, students board RealRyder ABF8 bikes that twist, turn, and lean to activate little-used muscle groups and simulate the limbo segment of the Tour de France. JoyRyde sessions greet beginners with sprints and hill climbs, and RaceRyde workouts challenge serious spinners to battle their classmates as they activate muscles in the arms, legs, glutes, and core. For low-impact aerobics classes, Sweat loans clients Kangoo Jumps shoes, whose rebounding soles can reduce stress on joints while dancing, kickboxing, or shattering altitude records in games of leapfrog.
The Haggin Museum’s redbrick pediment has cast its shadow on the grassy expanses of Victory Park since 1931. Though not much has changed in its outward appearance, the museum’s collection of fine artworks and historical artifacts has continued to evolve. Recent decades have brought new landscapes, portraits, and commercial artworks to the art wing, where one can view American painter Albert Bierstadt's stunning Yosemite landscapes alongside the iconic images of J. C. Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell’s predecessor at the Saturday Evening Post. The history galleries cast a spotlight on how Stockton has shifted and grown over the past 150 years. The finely curated exhibits craft a seamless narrative that begins with the pre-pioneer lifestyle of an average Native American family.
