At The Fighting Fit, certified instructors sharpen both kids’ and adults’ muscles and minds through lessons in krav maga and CrossFit sessions. Hebrew for "close or contact combat," the krav maga was created by Imi Lichtenfeld for the Israeli army, who needed a hand-to-hand fighting system that could be learned by anyone regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability. Unlike traditional martial arts, krav maga involves no forms, but rather teaches students basic self-defense skills. The multipurpose gym also leads CrossFit Bad Boys sessions that jump-start metabolisms and build dynamic, functional strength and balanced fitness. At least one instructor guides students and all times during classes, and the team offers personal training for individuals who fear being alone in a room with kettlebells.
Guardian Martial Arts & Fitness's staff of instructors enhances fitness via a robust schedule of lessons conducted in a welcoming, constructive atmosphere. Give your physique a once-weekly firming with the Pilates fundamentals class, a holistic approach to fitness designed to hone core strength, flexibility, and posture, or attack calories in a fast-paced kickboxing course incorporating hand weights and floor work. Pilates courses are offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 p.m., and kickboxing classes are offered Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., allowing workers out to sweat away the stress of the office and its high-pressure conference-room Scattergories tournaments.
Feet dance up and down the six electric strips that run across a 4,200-square-foot raised floor amid shouts of “En garde!” and blunted foils whipping through the air, meeting each other with the piercing ring of steel on steel or glancing off of padded vests. This scene takes place each weeknight at Salle d'Etroit Fencing Academy, where coaches Ben Schleis, Rebecca Keeling, and Jon Zelkowski teach the finer points of fencing, a sport originally developed by the French as an excuse to wear white after Bastille Day. The experts preside over classes for adults and youths, teaching them to wield foils, épées, and sabers.
In addition to organizing classes, the United States Fencing Association–sanctioned club hosts tournaments and matches pupils with new and used equipment at the pro shop. Should their weapons have issues after being used to clean whales' teeth, students can drop by the armory, where technicians take care of rewiring blades and other fixes.
At Forum Fitness Center, people build brawn in group classes hosted within a training facility replete with free weights, cardio machines, and a 60-foot indoor swimming pool. Fleet-footed exercisers can run laps around the ghosts of their slower selves on the indoor track, and those who prefer stationary exercise can sweat it out on cardiovascular machines. Iron pumpers can work with free weights—solo or under the supervision of personal trainers—to mold a physique more perfectly sculpted than Michelangelo's homemade garden gnome. Each week, the spacious studios house more than 25 group fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spinning, and Body Sculpt, during which thumping music scores a kinetic blend of weight-room exercises.

The owners of Smash Hit Kickboxing invite anyone interested in undertaking a physical, emotional, or spiritual transformation to explore kickboxing and meet with their cadre of experienced instructors. Each instructor boasts over 20 years of martial-arts immersion with backgrounds including a world-ranked kickboxing champion, a former member of the USA National Karate Team, and an award-winning hand model. Their program blends the fitness and self-defense aspects of kickboxing along with specific courses geared towards beginners or advanced students training for their black belts.
Sifu Owen Matson trains students on the ving tsun kung fu techniques taught to him by a line of Moy Tung sifu and grandmasters. Matson's classes cultivate students' balance of body and mind through the practice of three open-hand forms and two person drills.
A well-weathered teacher, Matson began his training in 1999 under the expert tutelage of Robert "Moy Yat Tung" Squatrito, who helped him master the swift movements and powerful strikes of the kung fu discipline. After becoming a member of the Moy Tung's MY4 and ICC inner training circles, Sifu Owen traveled to Detroit to open his ving tsun studio.

Master Nick Colling views every student who walks into his studio as a potential black belt. If anyone knows what it takes to get there, it’s him—he holds black belts in multiple styles and boasts a martial-arts teaching career that spans more than 25 years. Colling and his team of knowledgeable instructors tutor students in tae kwon do, krav maga, and aiki-jitsu. Though they’re experts in each style, to them, the martial arts aren’t just about physical disciplines—the instructors believe their students emerge from the programs as better people in all areas of life.
By practicing martial arts at Kil's Taekwondo Center, students of all ages and experience levels can learn to unlock their full potential while mastering valuable self-defense techniques. Grandmaster Yong Sup Kil oversees the organization, relying upon his 30 years of teaching experience—including time spent coaching students for international competitions—as he and his instructors help attendees improve their physical and mental fortitude.
Although classes explore various forms of self-defense, they emphasize the techniques of tae kwon do. That martial art aims to help students understand virtues like self-control, humility, and perseverance while teaching them how to protect themselves from assailants or stationary pieces of lumber. Since balanced self-improvement is the ultimate goal, the center also offers fitness classes that range from kickboxing and Zumba to yoga and tai chi.
Before founding World Sports Fitness, Pierre F. Mouele routinely went toe-to-head in the ring, earning a kickboxing championship title. Finally, he hung up his gloves and retired his cactus-covered shoes so that he could use his boxing training to whip people into shape. Today, he puts his clients and classes through the same demanding conditioning regimen that prepared him to lay out his opponents.
His students cut swathes of muscle pummeling red, black, and blue punching bags in Shotokan karate and self-defense classes. Alternatively, clients heft weights and toss heavy balls during strength-conditioning courses, which help them sculpt a fighter's body without any of the impact exercises associated with traditional boxing training, such as getting constantly punched.

When they aren’t teaching self-defense, instructors help students strengthen their bodies with Pilates and a kickboxing program that combines floor exercises and punching-bag work. In an aerobic interval program, teachers alternate stints of kickboxing, Pilates, and strength and toning techniques in small intervals to maintain cardio levels and help burn calories. Most people are familiar with the idea of a silent attacker, but at Aikido Canada, eighth-level Dan Kevin Blok Kyoshi and his certified Dan instructors teach the quiet art of aikido self-defense. Instead of kicking, punching, and breaking boards, aikido classes demonstrate lock holds, pins, and takedowns to help children and adults alike nonviolently defend themselves. These moves help the student control an attacker without harming them or having to restrain them with Chinese finger traps. All of their classes allow students build their character with self-development and self-improvement, not the destruction of others. Kevin’s lengthy resumé includes such highlights as authoring four books, earning the Canada 125 medal for service to his country, and founding the Chudokai Aikido Federation International.
My Tactical Advantage's experienced trainers help their pupils build up a strong sense of self-worth and hone their bodies into shape. A former U.S. Marine Sergeant draws from his experiences bodyguarding presidents and defending embassies to teach his students about fitness and close combat. During aerobic boot camps, he helps them put their doubts and self-judgments in a crippling suplex with kettlebells, stretching, toning exercises, cardio and strength training, cardio kickboxing, and mitt work.
