Water expands when it freezes, which is why roads crack in the winter and why most belts made of ice never seem to fit right in the summer. Expand your aquatic horizons with today's Groupon to Rocket Ice Arena in Bolingbrook. Choose between the following options:

  • For $8, you get an ice-skating outing for two (up to an $18 value).
  • For $15, you get an ice-skating outing for four (up to a $36 value).

Both outings include the following for each person:

  • Public-skating admission (up to a $6 value each)
  • Skate rentals (a $3 value each)

Cadres of gliding ice carvers etch grooves into the glassy surface of Rocket Ice Arena's full-size rink to the sounds of classic tunes spun by a DJ open to requests. Guests can don bladed boots like a gimmicky television chef before hitting the ice for public-skate sessions, many of which double as special skating events, such as rock 'n' roll or country-music skate. Themed skates with Skates, the Chicago Wolves mascot in January and Tommy Hawk, the Blackhawks mascot in February let kiddies caper about with beloved characters, pose for adorable photo ops, and nab valuable networking contacts. After the session is over, visitors can retire to Lake Placid Lodge to relax with hot drinks by the fireplace or rummage through the Internet on the free WiFi.

The Groupon Guide to: Ancient Heroes

Folklore is full of legendary heroes who may or may not have walked among us—Robin Hood, Johnny Appleseed, Mozart—but all of these possibly pretend protagonists have their roots in the heroes of classical mythology:

Hercules: Half man, half Zeus-baby, the ancient Greek hero known as Hercules is perhaps most famous for his nigh-impossible 12 labors—including wrestling the Nemean lion, giving the fabled hydra a chinchilla-style dust bath, and finding his Blockbuster Video card.

Beowulf: The epic story of this Nordic hero’s battle with the monstrous Grendel is one of the earliest examples of English-language literature, as well as one of the earliest premises for a children’s menu place-mat maze. Today, Beowulf is best known as the name of your brother’s previous band.

Gilgamesh: Not much is remembered about this ancient hero, other than his difficult-to-pronounce name and his unusual heritage—two-thirds god, one-third man—genetically attributed to two divine parents who both shared a shameful recessive human gene. In modern English, Gilgamesh translates roughly as "one who is incredibly hulking."
