Before man conquered his fear of water, he amused himself with dust sports such as pushing boulders off cliffs, wrestling tumbleweeds, and falling in the dust. Venture bravely into aquatic territory with this Groupon.

Choose from Three Options

  • $30 for a two-hour, land-based introductory kiteboarding course for one (a $60 value)
  • $54 for a two-hour, land-based introductory kiteboarding course for two (a $120 value)
  • $90 for a three-hour discovery basic course for one (a $180 value)

During the introductory course, a teacher to student ratio of 1:4 lets land-bound pupils ask questions and learn the fundamentals of kiteboarding while getting hands-on practice with a training kite and then a power kite. With the discovery basic course, the first lesson in a series of three, small groups of two or three students–with or without prior experience–go through an orientation on solid ground and then hit the waves to work on proper launch and landing techniques, as well as ways to maximize safety while on the water. The classes, which rotate among locations and are subject to weather conditions, are scheduled by appointment and take place from Monday–Saturday between 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Islander Kiteboarding

Christian Cooper fell in love with kiteboarding after seeing the athletic pastime on television. “I was always into extreme sports,” he explains. “I ran out and bought the gear, went straight out–and almost killed myself.” Realizing that mastering this watersport entailed training and practice, Christian headed for the Dominican Republic and immersed himself in kiteboarding, leaving behind his days as a bodyguard. Now an International Kiteboarding Organization– and Professional Air Sports Association–certified instructor, Christian and his partner preside over Islander Kiteboarding and share the thrill of skimming the waves with students during classes that impart both basic skills and advanced techniques for persuading kites to sweep boarders to the nearest sunken pirate ship. The lessons take advantage of the weather and glut of great kiteboarding locations in the Corpus Christi area, which were what drew Christian to the spot in the first place.

The Groupon Guide to: Logic Puzzles

Challenging the brain keeps it from turning into a soft, spreadable gel that looks delicious but will give you canker sores. Keep your brain firm and supple by exercising it with these logic puzzles:

• A man takes 10 flights of stairs to work every day but only has to walk down 9 flights of stairs to get home. How is this possible? (Answer: He takes 10 flights of stairs to work … in his backpack—they're small! He just walks up and down 9 flights of stairs to get to his office and back.)

• You're planning a dinner party for six people. Horace won't sit next to Patricia because of her political views, but he has to sit next to Alice because they're practically married. Nina and Catherine have to sit across from each other because they both love to laugh. Phillip will bring his own chair, which can't be near anyone because he has a leg condition. What is your seating plan? (Answer: Why do you always invite Phillip?)

• A father wants his three sons to inherit a glass figurine, a candle, and two pewter oranges. The eldest son has already been promised the candle. How should the father split up the rest of his estate so that it is fair? (Answer: The youngest son gets the figurine and the pewter oranges. Middle children inherit nothing in the culture where this takes place.)
