Founder Maxine Clark was inspired to created Build-A-Bear when she was shopping with a young friend, 10-year-old Katie. The two were in search of the perfect toy, but couldn’t find any that suited the little girl’s tastes. At one point, Katie commented on how easy it would be to just make her own toy. Though Katie was hoping for an excuse to start an art project, Maxine knew an opportunity when she saw it. She spent some time trying to purchase a factory that she could revamp as a custom bear-making facility, but to no avail. Instead, she decided to create own, but rather than placing the shop in a factory district, Maxine put it in a mall. The Saint Louis Galleria, to be exact.
This first location has since burgeoned into a national chain of stores where guests walk through eight stuffed-animal-making stations before taking their new toys home. During that process, each guest places a small satin heart inside their toy after adding “his or her own love and wishes.” Staffers also implant a barcode that encrypts each toy with its owners contact information in case it ever gets lost or escapes from a covert government facility. The company’s website also features a digital world called Bearville, where web customers can take a break from building their bears online to explore the town, play games, and watch videos. While you shop, you can also feel good about where you’re money is going. That’s because Build-A-Bear has given over a million dollars to the World Wildlife Fund and built playgrounds in both the United States and Canada. By using a Build-A-Bear coupon, you’re supporting a company that’s using it’s success to make the world a better place—and putting stuffed cats in adorable clothes.
