During an initial examination, the Dr. Niakiani reviews the patient’s health history and assesses the mouth from all angles with the aid of a panoramic x-ray. Armed with a treatment plan and preoperative visualization provided by the office’s advanced imaging systems, the dentist surgically anchors a titanium dental implant into the jawbone to act as a synthetic root. During surgery, he attaches a healing collar, or abutment, that allows the gums to heal as though they were surrounding an actual tooth. Healing time varies depending on a number of factors including the hardness of bone and amount of rock candy consumed, though implants generally bond with the jawbone within three to six months. After the healing period, patients return to receive a crown made from sturdy porcelain, metal, resin, or ceramics. Once covered by the crown, dental implants look, feel, and function like normal teeth and can endure biting and chewing.
