Costume contests require participants to successfully transform into someone else, making it difficult for ordinary people to defeat skilled actors or professional quantum leapers. Attempt to topple the best with today's Groupon: for $20, you get a Halloween Night Costume Bash outing for two at 7 p.m. on October 31 at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art (a $40 value). The outing includes:

  • Two admissions (a $30 value)
  • Two drink tickets, each valid for one drink (a $10 value)

701 Center for Contemporary Art, Free Times' choice for Best Columbia Art Gallery in 2010, fuses artistic exhibitions and seasonal scares with a spirited Halloween-night bash. Peppered with original pieces from a lineup of local artists, the spooky soirée offers competitive costume wearers the chance to earn prizes and masked fame in front of a panel of celebrity judges that includes Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, Cayce Mayor Elise Partin, and Eva Moore of Free Times. As the bass-driven sounds of various DJs fuel infectious head bobs from costume-clad rug-cutters and beat-fueled staring contests between rabble-rousing scarecrows, guests can meander over to Grand Hall, where Nickelodeon will be screening a selected horror film on a loop. Photo portraits conducted by professional studios and photographers drape the evening’s moments in ominous themes, whereas a food-truck food court mutes the terrifying screams of empty bellies with alluring eats. Although attendees are not required to don a costume, Halloween masks will be for sale at the door to offer an alternative to those who accidentally dressed like a local fugitive.

The Groupon Guide to: Substitute Teaching

Substitute teachers come to school when they learn a new fact that they just have to share with someone or when regular teachers run out of mental health. Here are some tips for taking over a class for a day:

Look the Part: Dress like a full-time teacher. If you don’t know how a teacher dresses because you never attended school, just wear a long-sleeve tank top, pants you can think in, and running shoes for chasing down students' dreams and turning them into more realistic dreams.

Write Your Name: Students today have exciting names such as Stycxx and K'ydyn, making it impossible for them to remember your boring, vowel-bloated moniker. Write your real name on the chalkboard, or simply go by "Sub Sandwich."

Give Them Options: Let your students choose between watching a movie and not watching a movie. Anyone who chooses not to watch a movie must stay late after school and watch two movies.

Take Control: Don't let the class get out of control. Before speaking, students should raise their hands, and before thinking, they should be reminded that their opinions are smaller than those of their teacher.
