A full bookshelf not only provides a conversation piece for guests, but also decreases the odds they'll pull out the tome that swivels the bookcase around and reveals your secret crying room. Build up your book collection with this Groupon.
$10 for $20 Worth of Used Books
For less than $20, you can pick up a copy of Sue Taylor's Hans Bellmer: The Anatomy of Anxiety, Ranulf Rayner's The Story of The America's Cup 1851–1995, or Diego Rivera, a biography by Pete Hamill, as well as a rotating stock of literary classics in hardcover and paperback.
You won't find a barista selling coffee at Adobe Bookshop, or an elaborate bodybuilding-magazine display, or the stress-ball keychain that's on a coworker's holiday list. What you will find are books. Lots of them—stacked every which way on the shelves and floor, in a sort of organized chaos reminiscent of a Magic Eye print. Call him old-fashioned, but that's what Andrew McKinley believes a bookstore should sell. He's been in business for nearly 25 years, and although the store has seen its ups and downs—as reported by the San Francisco Bay Guardian and Mission Mission—guests still stop by to chat, ponder their pages, and attempt to build a blanket fort in a living-room area complete with potted trees, armchairs, and some well-worn rugs.
Yet despite its laser focus on literary wonders, the shop does branch out. McKinley has always had a fondness for meeting people who strive to be creators, and as such has hosted a gathering spot for emerging visual and performance artists. The Backroom Gallery, which opened in 2001, has become a meeting place for local painters, writers, and musicians and hosts events such as art installations and poetry readings.
This place can be a great place to get lost in on a rainy day (which it was when I went). There is also a neat art gallery in the back.Saliha B., Yelp, 3/18/12
Stacks of musty books with yellowed pages but still perfectly readable await you at Adobe Books. It's organized chaos in a pleasant sense.Martin C., Yelp, 4/14/12
