Einstein famously said that imagination is more important than knowledge, which is why he also famously referred to the moon as "the night sun." Train your brain with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

  • $29 for a two-hour BYOB acrylics painting class for one (up to a $60 value)
  • $49 for a two-hour BYOB acrylics painting class for two (up to a $120 value)

Classes are held Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Amidst a 360-degree view of Los Angeles, students learn how to mix acrylic paint colors and create the illusions of shadow and light from artist Ann Bridges. They then apply these techniques to an 8"x10" canvas, completing their own still-life portrait alongside approximately 10 other pupils. All supplies are included.

"I love teaching art," declares teaching veteran and artist Ann Bridges on her YouTube video. Her students agree. "She helps you develop your own technique and your own style," shares one, and another muses, "Ann is the kind of teacher who creates a really great atmosphere in the studio… I feel like it's a place where I can improve my technique and also foster my creativity."

Drawing inspiration from locales ranging from the cerulean vistas of Catalina Island to the smoky peaks of the Eastern Sierras and the urban landscapes of Los Angeles, Bridges paints as well as she instructs. She creates her work with an impressionist style, an artist's eye, and wrist flicks puppeteered by Monet's ghost.

The Groupon Guide to: Color Theory

If you're a visual artist, you've probably got a box of crayons, a crayon sharpener, and a tiny ceramic cup you store the crayon shavings in so you can later melt them into a new crayon color that you call "garbage." You've also probably got a good understanding of color theory. If you're not a visual artist, here's some information that will be new to you:

  • A color wheel is a circular diagram that selects the best colors for your work of art based on which colors you land on when you're blindfolded and stabbing with a knife.

  • Staring at warm colors, such as red, dark red, and reddish black, makes your body feel like it's been covered in a wool blanket and then buried from the neck down.

  • Staring at cool colors, such as cool red, makes your body feel like it's been covered in a loose layer of gauze and left to get even cooler beneath a nice, shady tree in the middle of nowhere.

  • Complementary colors are defined as "any two colors that, when combined, produce a small egg containing the color ‘prison-shoe gray.’"

Which popular color is best known for hatching from an egg?

Reviews

  • Each time I walked away with a little work of art I could be very proud of, and these classes have encouraged me to start exploring painting on my own

  • The space itself is light filled and while not huge it never seems crowded even with 6 or more students.
