A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a crown that functions and looks like a real tooth. After an exam, the dental surgeon installs the implant into the jaw. The implant then fuses to the jawbone, which can take several months. The patient then returns to the office so the dentist can attach an abutment to the implant and take impressions to create the crown. Several weeks later, the dentist fits the crown over the abutment to complete the process. Altogether, the dental-implant process takes an average of four to nine months.
