Arena Cinema

When L.A. Weekly's Michael Nordine reviewed Arena Cinema just a year after its 2012 opening, he appeared smitten. He praised its "DIY, low-fi and charmingly austere" environment, and declared, "You get the sense just from sitting in the theater that this really is a unique, necessary environment for film in Los Angeles." The glowing review is testament to the fact that Arena's founders have fulfilled the legacy that the location's previous inhabitant began. The venue was once a part of the Egyptian Theatre, one of Sid Grauman's legendary creations and the cinema's current next-door neighbor. Since opening, however, Arena Cinema has blazed a new trail, attracting its own audiences with a curated selection of first-run indie films.

Arena's founders are dedicated to featuring films located off the beaten path, seeking out smart, unique pieces from independent distributors and championing films that might not (yet!) be darlings of the festival circuit. They put the art—and artist—front and center by programming dynamic, free-wheeling Q&As nearly every week with directors, performers, and other industry pros, including Kevin Smith and Elijah Wood. One recent event included a block of discussions with top-tier casting directors that accompanied the documentary Casting By, which is about the influential but unsung role of casting directors in Hollywood. The intimate theater makes this film indulgence even more gratifying with a concession stand stocked with healthy snacks and a warm and inviting staff.
