The Issue: Importance of Reading Aloud to Babies
By their first birthdays, most babies will have learned all of the sounds they need to speak their native languages, according to research from KidsHealth. Reading aloud to babies not only teaches them words but also fosters strong mental development and introduces concepts including numbers, colors, and shapes.
The Campaign: Distributing Early-Literacy Materials to Moms
If 42 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then the Arlington Public Library can provide My First Library Card packs for 42 new mothers and their newborns at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital. Each additional $10 raised will fund a My First Library Card pack for another mother and her baby. The pack includes a bag, children’s book, My First Library Card application, and informational handouts on early-childhood literacy.
Arlington Public Library
The Arlington Public Library maintains a comprehensive stock of fiction and nonfiction reading and learning materials through a network of a central library and six branch libraries. Residents receive free access to borrow these materials and can use the onsite databases for research. The library sponsors a variety of programs including public-speaking and Microsoft Excel lessons for adults, story-time sessions for preschoolers, and a free book program for new mothers to read to their children.
