Of all the bars one sets for themselves in life, from limbo bars to chin-up bars to passing the Bar exam, the wine bar is the easiest and grapiest to achieve. Today's Groupon makes it even easier and grapier: for $20, you get $45 worth of wine by the bottle with any food order (not included in Groupon) at Bacar on Brannan Street.

Bacar was voted #2 Wine Bar in San Francisco, and you'll see why when you set eyes on its three-story-high wall of wine (in case you're curious, the #1 Wine Bar was a 20-story bottle full of wine that people could swim in). Wine in its liquid state pairs quite nicely with Bacar's solid foundation of seasonal cuisine. Head chef Douglas Bernstein loves to combine local ingredients into delicious Mediterranean-tinged recipes such as the king salmon crudo or pancetta and orcchiette pasta.

For the main attraction, though, browse the mammoth selection of 800 international and artisan wines, including 50 wines under $50 that fit perfectly into today's Groupon. Complement any feast with polite words, furtive glances, and a swell bottle of Borgo Maddalena 2007 (a crisp, dry white wine, $44) or perhaps a Monrosso Chianti 2007 (from Tuscany, $40). Select from a wealth of sparkling wines, round white wines, light-bodied reds, full-bodied reds, and ethereal reds that don't have any bodies whatsoever.

If you're more in the mood for brunch than vino, treat your brunch-tooth to $35 worth of neither breakfast nor lunch for $15 with today's subdeal. Bacar's brunch menu is so delicious it earned Maxim 2008's Best Use of Duck Fat Award in spite of some fierce competition from other finalists. Go for the crispy pork-belly sandwich with avocado, pickled jalapeno, and egg salad ($14), or try the classic country-bread French toast served with seasonal fruits ($9). Pair them with a bottomless Bloody Mary or mimosa ($12 each). Sunday brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Reservations are required for the wine deal and for parties larger than six for the brunch deal. Please call (415) 904-4100 at least a day in advance.

Reviews

More than 50 reviewers on Yahoo! Local give Bacar four stars, while Citysearchers give it 3.5 stars:

  • Good food, awesome space, and cordial waitstaff...I really liked the wide open space and the exposed brick. – Sean Flynn, Yahoo! Local
  • this is an amazing space! it's a new york style restaurant in san francisco. the service is fantastic, the people are all great, and they have a bible for a wine list – lyss61, Citysearch
  • …the food was exquisite and the wine we had was amazing (although it took me a while to pick it with the selection on offer). Our server (Paul) was attentive but not at our table every 10 seconds. The atmosphere was great and the jazz was cool. – marinadazza, Citysearch
