Designed for beginning music students and complete novices, the Intro to Music camp teaches groups of up to six children to craft their own versions of various instruments, and then learn to play the real thing. For three hours each day, students receive age-appropriate musical instruction for piano, drums, violin, guitar, and voice—and at the end of the week, perform a recital with their favorite instrument.
Alternatively, the voice camp, which meets for 90 minutes each day, helps children explore their vocal curiosity through rhythm, pitch, and group-singing exercises. Instructors teach students several age-appropriate songs over the course of camp, culminating in a miniature recital on the final day.
Intro to Music camps run from Monday, June 24, to Friday, June 28; Monday, July 15, to Friday, July 19; and Monday, August 12, to Friday, August 16. Voice camps run from Monday, June 17, to Friday, June 21, and Monday, July 29, to Friday, August 2. See the schedules for both camps here.
Urmi Batavia began teaching private piano and violin lessons out of her home in 2002. As demand for her classes grew, so did her need for room, and two years later she opened her own space dedicated to music instruction: Batavia Studios. There, she shares her teaching responsibilities with a team of instructors well versed in percussion, strings, woodwinds, and voice. Though they still provide private lessons for adults and children, they also helm weeklong children’s summer camps and oversee a store filled with musical instruments, song books, and music accessories, such as jars filled with Al Green’s voice.
