Battlefield Park Polo Club
During their free time, Battlefield Park Polo Club's horses roam across acres of pastures, grazing on fresh grass and socializing with the retention pond's fish and turtles. When at work, they are patient lesson horses, on which students learn riding basics while being aided by an expert staff. Dori Haller Burner, the facility's owner, operator, and chief instructor, knew that she was more suited to this type of setting than an office ever since she found her love for polo back in Newport, Rhode Island. Today, she also serves as the coach of the George Washington University Men's and Women's intercollegiate teams, though she still finds fulfillment in introducing newcomers to the sport.
To do so, Dori and her staff start with the basics. Riding lessons, which can impart skills from feeding horses to riding in figure eights, unfold in either an outdoor or indoor arena. The latter's 16-foot ceilings make it ideal for practicing jumps. At summer camps, the team complements lessons with games, and other traditional summer camp activities. Once they have developed some skills, students can sign up for polo lessons as well as instruction on both the English and Western riding styles.
