Q&A with Stephanie Washington, Owner and Coach at Beauty by Barbell
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Here, the coaches are the owners. Our passion and original design for the program is shared with every client because we are at every class. We have created this program through years of research, and have degreed professionals that endorse it. We have each day's workout planned out to a mathematical equation so that every client, beginner or expert, receives the same workout. Most gyms that utilize similar movements give everyone the same weight; therefore, everyone gets a different workout. That is unfair programming. We record and track all efforts from clients, and tell them to use 85% of their max for this workout. If they don't remember it, no problem, we have it recorded.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
We believe that people get what they put into it. And not everyone wants to be a star athlete. We have to respect that. Some people want to be the best of the best, and we respect that, too. We get to know our clients, and if they want to be pushed, oh boy, do we push. But if they want to socialize and have a place to call home, we do that, too. We have an eclectic group and like it that way. We are paid to help the client achieve their goals—and we do exactly that.
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
A typical class begins with chatting and warming up: a light jog, dynamic stretching, and mobility. Then we move right into the technique for whatever we're working on that day. Let's use the squat as an example. We will go over the proper squat form and the likely mistakes to look out for. Then I will have everyone perform the squat with NO weight and critique where needed. Then we will move to the barbell. If everyone has mastered the squat, we all stay on pace and perform the determined set and rep scheme. If someone has not mastered it, I or the other coaches will go over the issues in a precise and respectful manner. After the allotted time has passed, we will move on to the next item. The class will always close with conditioning and recovery.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Upon entry into the program, we will offer to measure and track all clients. Some want to; some don't, but it is a free service that we offer. In addition to that, we can go over lifestyle and diet changes to better aid the goals that the client is hoping to obtain. Our facility is a very welcoming place. We are an uplifting place—we celebrate everyone's achievements like they were our own. It is a big deal to devote yourself to something new, and our veterans have not forgotten when they were beginners.
