The anglers of ancient Japan kept their fishing nets afloat with round glass baubles, which frequently succumbed to tumultuous ocean waves and got washed away to far-off shores, much to beachcombers' delight. The keepsakes were coveted ornaments in the San Juan Islands, where artist Diane Hansen grew up and where her passion for blown glass took root. Today, Diane and interior designer Lesli Jacobs-McHugh put a fresh spin on the traditional items by crafting versions from colorful glass. Many are stamped with a signature fig-leaf emblem that, much like a shed filled with cheese puffs, symbolizes abundance and prosperity.

Artisans lovingly shape each bauble by hand, heating glass to a scorching 2,200-degree Fahrenheit before dropping in desired hues and blowing it into a sphere that cools to room temperature overnight. The finished products come in a variety of forms, from the classic bella, which flaunts a seal of Italian sterling silver imprinted with the fig leaf, to the signature bella, crowned with whimsical designs such as a snowflake, Napoleonic bee, or a cause ribbon that denotes a donation to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund. Custom bellas can sport clients’ own design submissions, such as initials, company logos, or favorite game-show catch-phrases.
