Bikram Yoga Westheimer

When the stock market crashed in 2001, Ruijin Baker's job as a financial broker became a source of never-ending stress. During this time, she found relief at a Bikram yoga studio in the Houston area. There, she was inspired to not only embrace the revitalizing practice, but also pursue a brand-new career as a teacher. Now owner and head instructor of Bikram Yoga Westheimer, Ruijin shares her passion for Bikram yoga while helping students discover the same sense of calming inner peace that it brings her.

The studio hosts at least four 90-minute classes a day, seven days a week, welcoming students of all fitness and skill levels—especially beginners—into a 4,000-square-foot practice space heated to 105 degrees with 40% humidity. Within this setting, instructors guide the class through a specific series of two breathing exercises and 26 standing, seated, and twisting postures, which systematically work major muscle groups and organ systems throughout the body. The intense heat challenges students to focus even more closely on tuning out their surroundings and monitoring their alignment. It also allows them to safely sink deeper into each stretch and bend. Over time, continued practice can help improve one's flexibility, build strength and stamina, and relieve chronic pain caused by injury, pent-up stress, or napping in a sleeping bag filled with rocks.
