Donations provide personalized birthday parties for children experiencing homelessness, including a gift, cake, and party supplies

The Fine Print

The Issue: Lack of Resources to Celebrate Kids' Birthdays

Birthday Dreams works with more than 37 homeless shelters and transitional-housing agencies across the greater Puget Sound area. Many of the children the organization’s volunteers meet have never celebrated a birthday. They often do not even know when their birthday is, as their parents have been forced to forgo yearly celebrations to afford food and other necessities.

The Campaign: Hosting Birthday Parties for Kids in Need

If 30 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Birthday Dreams can provide birthday parties for six Seattle-area children experiencing homelessness, thanks to matching donations from Specialty Metals. Donations will be matched up to $300. Birthday Dreams volunteers deliver a complete party kit directly to the child's shelter or transitional home; it is packed with festive balloons and streamers, goody bags, party games, and a cake adorned with the child's name. Every child also receives a personalized birthday gift. Each additional $100 raised will provide a birthday party for another child.

Birthday Dreams

Birthday Dreams’ volunteers devote themselves to one simple principle: all children deserve a birthday, regardless of economic circumstance. By working with homeless shelters and transitional-housing agencies throughout the community, they’re able to help children in need enjoy one special day of celebration. Their meticulous party planning leaves no detail unaccounted for—everything from eating utensils and personalized gifts to decorations and a fresh-baked cake ensures the child's day will be full of smiles. They encourage community involvement by soliciting handmade gifts from local crafters and inviting volunteers to bring their own children to help out at the party. Since its founding, Birthday Dreams has curated more than 1,100 birthday parties across the greater Puget Sound area, averaging about 60 celebrations each month.

The Groupon Guide to: Getting to the Head of the Class

It's a proven fact that people who do well in school are more likely to rise to the top of competitive job markets and prison hierarchies. Here are some tips for becoming the cream of the academic crop:

Bring Your Teacher an Apple: Teachers are notoriously starved for potassium because they're so busy teaching everyone else that they don’t have time to teach themselves about nutrition.

Answer Every Question: Teachers don't know the answers to anything, which is why they have to ask their students. Help out the people who were so busy teaching that they never had time to learn.

Watch TV Instead of Doing Your Homework: Teachers are so busy teaching that they have no time to watch TV. You're the only one who will be able to fill them in on the hilarious happenings during the most recent episode of I'd Like to File a Complaint—About My Wife!

Is your child's teacher potassium deficient? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
