Body Reserve

For decades, bankers crunched numbers and counted money at 207 Fifth Avenue. Today, the building is full of exercisers doing crunches and counting reps, but the family behind Body Reserve has chosen to maintain the building’s incongruous prewar charm throughout its quarter century as a fitness emporium. Lights glow from below onto a latticework balcony railing, and stately square pillars support an enormous wood-framed clock built right into the wall.

In addition to weight benches and—on a mezzanine up close to the Greek Revival–style crown moulding—rows of spinning machines, the gym hosts classes and personal-training sessions taught by energetic instructors and the gym’s canine mascot, Nike. Boot camp pairs participants with fitness coach Terrell Stanback for a high-energy session that blends military workout routines with cardio and strength training to burn up to 500 calories per session. Spinning burns calories quickly aboard easy-to-master bikes, whereas Hatha yoga takes a slower pace, combining breathing and slow, purposeful movements to release stress and tone limbs.

The Groupon Guide to: Washing Your Hands

In this sick, wet world, nothing is more important than washing your hands. Whether you've just used the bathroom or just touched a child's bacteria-laden face, here is what you'll need to do to regain your purity:

  • Turn on the hot-water faucet.
  • Get the soap out of the hermetically sealed safe where you keep it so humidity won't cause it to burst into suds.
  • Once the water is hot enough to kill (and cook) a bug, plug the sink so it fills up.
  • Drop the soap in the full sink to make soapy water, or "clean soup," as it's often called.
  • Submerge your fingers in the water one at a time in order of filthiness. Repeat until your fingers have soaked up all the water, leaving the sink completely dry.
  • If you ever forget what to do, just remember the childhood hand-washing rhyme: "My fingers, my fingers are drinking clean soup/ My heavens, my heavens, it hurts."

What are the ingredients in clean soup?
