For $99, today's side deal gets you admission to a daylong martial arts workshop, known as the Boston Martial Arts Academy, at the Boston Center for Adult Education (a $199 value). The workshop, scheduled for Saturday, August 28, features participation from local schools and brings together master instructors in eight combat disciplines—giving both current practitioners and curious non-fighting monks a chance to experiment with new styles and techniques. As with most no-holds-barred tournaments held on remote islands, all participants will receive a T-shirt.
The Boston Martial Arts Academy keeps participants engaged by combining classroom instruction with hand-to-hand, foot-to-foot, and face-to-mat demonstration classes and classroom lectures. Try out karate to get the Cobra Kais to leave you alone, or aikido to toss your opponent as easily as a used Kleenex. For more kosher kombat, learn Krav Maga like a member of the Israeli Defense Forces. Otherwise, spike your kicks with punches in tae kwon do, out-Keanu Keanu in kung fu, or learn how to pin another man to the ground and make him submit to you in Brazilian jiujitsu. You can also sample less-fighty disciplines such as capoeira and tai chi. Each participant must choose at least six classes to receive his or her certification at closing ceremonies.
Reviews
Though reviews are lacking for the martial arts academy, the Boston Center for Adult Education gets a four-star average from Yelpers for its other offerings:
- The quality of instruction of the courses have been stellar. I really felt I learned a new skill and that the value was well worth it. – Kim K.
- I walk out feeling so much smarter and ready to take on the world. – Danielle M.
- The converted house is amazing and I would love to come here everyday and learn languages and salsa dancing and all kinds of delicious food making. It has the old school Boston flavor that I love so much. – Deepa C.
