The Issue: Impact of Inadequate School Supplies

For students facing financial hardships, books and school supplies can be luxuries that are out of reach. When they go to school without adequate supplies, many are forced to borrow paper and pencils and share textbooks with their neighbors, adding unnecessary stress and fear of stigma to the learning experience. Boys Hope Girls Hope of San Francisco Bay Area works with academically motivated children whose circumstances—financial or otherwise—pose a challenge to their development. Through afterschool academic and assistance programs, the organization helps young scholars build the confidence and self-esteem necessary to reach their potential.

The Campaign: Purchasing School Supplies for a Student

If 30 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Boys Hope Girls Hope of San Francisco Bay Area can purchase one year’s worth of books and school supplies for one girl in its Hope Academy. With all the necessary resources, the student can follow classroom lessons without borrowing from her classmates and can complete her homework and school projects. Each additional $300 raised will purchase books and supplies for another girl.

Scholars in Hope Academy’s afterschool academic program complete lessons and study on their own for a minimum of two hours each day. In addition to academic support, the scholars take part in supplemental activities on Saturdays, such as community-service projects, museum visits, and archery classes.

Boys Hope Girls Hope of San Francisco Bay Area

Boys Hope Girls Hope of San Francisco Bay Area provides HOPE—a home, parenting, opportunities, and education—within a residential setting to improve the lives of children regardless of their financial circumstances. Youth enter the program between the ages of 10 and 14 and live in the home through their high-school graduations. While there, they engage in educational activities, counseling, and summer-enrichment programs and have access to health care and personal stipends. After young people graduate from the program, Boys Hope Girls Hope continues to support them through adulthood, providing them with financial assistance and emotional support for college, temporary housing during summer breaks, and aid in gaining employment.
