From the dawn of time, caves have exerted a pull on the human imagination, presenting themselves as ideal settings for caveman houses, caveman art galleries, and romantic caveman picnics. Sup with a suitor subterraneally with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of continental cuisine and drinks at Café la Cave, across from Allstate Arena in Des Plaines.

For 40 years, Café la Cave's cavelike yet cozy dining room has harbored a cache of epicurean delights and bacchanalian imbibulants. As hushed piano tones drift through the cavern's romantic atmosphere, pairs thrill as chefs cook and carve much of the menu beside their table. Signature item steak diane ($29) is gently infused with garlic and shallots finished in rich cognac, and expertly sautéed before diners’ eyes. The rack of lamb ($43), coated in a tangy mustard crust, frolics atop a meadow of fresh veggies, and the whole dover sole francais ($39) falls from the chef’s fillet knife and splashes in a pool of toasted almond butter. A full bar and carefully considered wine program work with entrees as smoothly as a by-the-books detective and his new partner fresh out of clown college.

The Groupon Guide to: Chess Pieces

Chess is often called "the sport of the mind" because it flexes the mental muscles and its grandmasters have nicknames such as The Incinerator and Destructo, The Smashing One. To help you become a champion, here are the basics of the different chess pieces:

  • Pawn: Moves straight ahead one space at a time, but if it reaches your opponent's end of the board, the pawn is replaced with an obedient salamander.
  • Rook: Looks like a castle, tastes like a hamburger. Whichever player eats both of his opponent's rooks first is given an extra king "for luck."
  • Bishop: In addition to two black and two white bishops, each chess set also includes two yellow bishops, in case a third player wants to join in.
  • Knight: When a player loses a knight, he has the option of playing the rest of the match as a game of checkers.
  • Ward: Shaped like a bell, this piece can only be seen by the pure of heart.
  • Queen: Can move an infinite number of spaces in any direction, or through time to surprise your opponent earlier in the match.
  • King: At the end of every match, when only the two kings remain, the players fistfight.
