The dental exam, cleaning, and x-rays search mouths for any warning signs of cavities or other issues. Alternatively, a dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a crown that looks and functions like a real tooth. During the procedure, the dentist installs the implant, a small metal cylinder, into the jawbone. After it has fused to the bone, the cylinder is fitted with an abutment to hold the crown—the replacement tooth—in place. The time of the procedure varies by patient, and it usually takes six to nine months for the bone to fuse to the implant.
