Chef Cathleen Li whips up gourmet cheesecakes, ice-cream sundaes & honey-almond panna cotta from scratch as guests sip inventive cocktails

Whereas ice cream is a byproduct of milk, which is milked from cows, sprinkles are a byproduct of dreams, which are milked from fairies. Taste mystical treats with today's Groupon: for $17, you get a dessert night for two at Candybar (up to a $38 value), which includes the following:

  • Two desserts (up to a $20 value)
  • Two cocktails (up to an $18 value)

Candybar's pastry chef, Cathleen Li, handcrafts a rotating menu of luscious cakes, ice creams, and sorbets in an eatery that specializes in desserts. Like a duffel bag filled with pudding, ice-cream sundaes tote sweet contents such as macaroons, brownies, and vanilla custard. At candlelit tables, spoons dive into the creamy depths of cheesecake with pink grapefruit leche or honey-almond panna cotta, which wins over sweet teeth with accompaniments of cherries, soft caramel powder, and chocolate ice cream.

Inventive cocktails range from the triple-chocolate bellini with chocolate sorbet to the blood-orange cocktail, a glass of sparkling wine spiced with blood-orange bitters and a solitary sugar cube infamous for burning its bridges. Soft drinks, coffee, or tea can be substituted for adult libations.

Minimalist bulbs suspended from ceiling tracks cast dancing shadows across plush red couches, black-and-white damask poufs, and walls adorned with contemporary artwork. A collection of board games infuses the dessert lounge’s chic atmosphere with a touch of whimsy and encourages good-natured rivalries between friends or ill-tempered brawls between the Parker Brothers.

The Groupon Guide to: Spotting a Robot

It’s no secret that robots walk among us—wearing human skin, pretending to enjoy human fruit, and sleeping while standing perfectly upright on subway trains. What are some other ways you can spot a hidden robot?

• Try “accidentally” getting them wet. For instance, casually hold a large container of travel water in the same hand on which you wear your wristwatch—thus spilling water on an adjacent stranger when you check the hour. If he or she becomes upset that water has been spilled on them, well done—you’ve sniffed out a cyberman.

• Test their logic circuits with a paradox, such as “This statement is a lie,” or “Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction AND The Shawshank Redemption for Best Picture.” If they argue that Forrest Gump really was the best film of 1994, nice work, my friend—you’ve ousted an android.

• Simply read the following statement out loud: “I am secretly a robot. I keep this secret even from myself.” If this statement causes you absolutely no alarm, it has most likely been cushioned by the multiple, impenetrable layers of firewall shielding your identity matrix from the cold, metallic truth. Congratulations, and I’m sorry—you’ve found a robot.
