Cantina Mexicana

Chris Curtis fell in love with Mexican cooking during his travels through Mexico, where he’d wolf down spicy tacos at roadside cantinas and sample flavourful fish ceviches at high-end restaurants. Hoping to share the complex flavours and fiery spices with his fellow Canadians, Chris spearheaded his own Mexican eatery in Halifax—Cantina Mexicana.

Deep in the restaurant’s kitchen, Chris and seasoned chef Maria del Carmen Tenorio whip up the Mexican tacos, burritos, and fajitas lauded by The Coast. They favour fresh, locally sourced ingredients and premium meats, such as slow-roasted pork, baked fish, and chicken that has a basic education in Latin grammar. They garnish their dishes in a range of salsas—from the mild pico de gallo to the ultra-hot xnipec sauce. Meanwhile, their guests perch on the bright green stools of the warm dining room, where vivid murals of ancient Mexico stretch across the walls.
