In a Nutshell

Chefs employ imported ingredients and family recipes honed in Puebla to create rave-worthy cemitas, tacos, and chalupas

Though black beans make ideal fillings for tacos, they work slightly less well as fillings for teddy bears and cavities in one's molar. Feast on functional fillings with this Groupon.

Cemitas Puebla

Every four–six weeks, Cemitas Puebla's owner and chef, Tony Anteliz, sends a family member to Mexico to gather ingredients such as chipotle peppers and giant cinnamon sticks. He relies on time-tested family recipes honed in Puebla, Mexico to assemble these imported ingredients into sandwiches, tacos, and salsas that have been praised in the Chicago Tribune and on WTTW 11’s Check, Please!. Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives highlighted the restaurant’s signature cemita sandwich: sesame-seed-bread laden with fresh oaxaca cheese, papalo—a fragrant herb grown in Tony's mother's garden—house-stewed chipotles, and a choice of meats such as breaded pork and carne asada. Inspired by Lebanese shawarmas, tacos arabes begin with layers of pork shoulder and onion skewered on a rotisserie. The stack of meat rotates as slowly as a ferris wheel being ridden by a herd of elephants before a member of the open-air-kitchen staff shaves off tender meat and tucks it into pita-like tortillas.

The Groupon Guide to: Diner Speak

The main attraction to eating at a “greasy spoon” diner is to hear the delightful lingo the servers use to relay your order to the cooks. Many people will often order second and third meals just to hear the servers yell and then discreetly throw away the food. Here is a guide to their secret language:

Order: Double cheeseburger, medium rare, with pickles
Diner Speak: Double hockey puck made of meat with a pink soul and zombie nickels

Order: Turkey sandwich on rye, no mayo
Diner Speak: Professor Gobblington with a PhD in the economics of foreign grain markets, send the white stranger packing

Order: Two eggs, scrambled, with bacon and coffee, cream and sugar
Diner Speak: Twin albino footballs meet with a tragic accident, send the mother a crispy flag and fill the dark night with the first tragically beautiful snowfall of winter

Order: Pancakes
Diner Speak: Lil’ Sweetie Flat Breads starring Shirley Temple (1934)

Order: Pot roast
Diner Speak: Roast, pot-style

Zombie nickels: cause they’re soft, green, and dead feelin’
