About Center for Southern Folklore

Memphis stands at a crossroads of southern culture. Settled between the blues music of the Mississippi Delta, the bluegrass of Appalachia, and the country crooning of the deep south, this city celebrates the region’s artistic soul in all its forms.

The Center for Southern Folklore is a family-friendly institution that celebrates that bounty of music and art and invites guests to relax with a variety of live events, lessons and lectures. Hear blues, bluegrass, and folk bands perform or interact with and learn basic banjo techniques from a professional musician. Then every Labor Day weekend, this party spills into the streets for the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival, a three-day celebration of music, culture, and arts. Guests can also browse the Folklore Store's collection of folk art, books, CDs, and more to bring a little piece of southern culture home with them.

We Went when they had an acoustic blues/folk performance in their coffee house on a Saturday night. It was a small, intimate setting. Zeke Johnson performed. We enjoyed each song and the story that went with them. Judy (I think she runs the place) took us for a tour during a break. The center is her labor of love. Go if you can. It's a nice break from the loud Beale Street scene. Plus you'll get a great sense of the culture that created the blues and folk music. If you're lucky enough to go when there's a performance you will hear blues/folk played the way it was when it was created.
