Besides using a pottery wheel, the easiest way to manipulate clay is to threaten to rebury it in the dark, sandy hole where you found it. Turn clay to putty in your hands with this Groupon.

Choose from Four Options

  • $20 for pottery painting for two (up to a $40 value)
  • $38 for pottery painting for four (up to an $80 value)

During pottery-painting sessions, each participant chooses a ceramic item up to a $20 value, and then uses the studio’s brushes and paints to embellish the selected piece with colorful brushstrokes. Guests can choose from a wide array of items––such as plates, ornaments, and snowman figurines––and receive complimentary personal instruction if needed. Materials and studio time is included.

During Clay Handprint Santas classes, participants press one of their hands into a slab of clay to create an imprint that will be the basis of a holiday-themed design. The instructor then extracts the handprint, allows the clay to dry, and fires it in a kiln. Participants return to the studio a week later to embellish their handprints with multicolored paints. Ceramics by Tess's sunny studio welcomes adults and children to craft one-of-a-kind creations in a fun, supportive environment. Against a lilac wall in the warmly lit entryway, more than 6,000 ceramics await creative types to emblazon their utilitarian canvases in paint-your-own pottery sessions. A rainbow of acrylic paints and shiny glazes transforms the blank objects into original works of art, from a coffee mug emblazoned with World's Best Third Cousin Twice Removed to a piggybank filled with glazed dollar bills.

The studio also proffers hands-on, all-inclusive classes, which guide groups through the shaping of a single item, such as a bird molded from a lump of clay. Children as young as 3 may participate in some classes, and adults take over the shop Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. onward, sipping BYOB drinks and crafting more complex structures, such as life-size replicas of the Great Wall of China.
