Held on Saturday, April 20, the one-day race sets teams scampering through the city as they solve clues, chart the best course, and discover new corners of their burb. Racers complete their scavenging adventure at the Finish Line Festival, where they flaunt finisher medals and raise their glasses in celebration with other participants amid live music, food trucks, drink options, outdoor games, and a costume contest. The race starts at 1:30 p.m., but participants can show up from before or soon after the whistle to pick up prerace packets and change into a uniform that's half track-and-field athlete, half Columbo. The top race prize is $500, the best costume nets $300, and the top 50 teams qualify for the National Championship race. The DC Challenge partners with Back on My Feet, with which a portion of the race's proceeds are shared. The Ultimate Urban Scavenger Race

Challenge Nation pioneered the urban-adventure race with a race season that includes visits to 35 cities across the country. Each scavenger hunt is personalized to the hosting city, exploring its many diverse neighborhoods with a series of clues that would test even the most skilled children's-book detective. The teams—comprised of at least two people—vie for a $300 first-place prize. The _Amazing Race_–style competition rewards quick wits and wise planning over physical fitness, so the best way to prepare is by doing logic puzzles while eating Funyuns and lounging in a La-Z-Boy. The top 25 teams qualify, the top five receiving free entry, to compete in the national championship, which rewards winning teams with a $5,000 cash prize.
