Mexican fast food is not generally known for being eco-friendly, as a poorly made taco can take centuries to biodegrade. With today's Groupon, green Austinites can make a run for the border while staying true to themselves. For $10, you get $20 worth of fresh, local Mexican fare and drinks at Changos Taqueria, the locally owned and operated little brother of Austin’s upscale, award-winning Mexican restaurant Manuel’s. This deal is good for both Austin locations: 3023 Guadalupe St. and 3005 South Lamar Blvd. Although you can buy two Groupons, you may only use one per order.

The Changos menu features all-natural meats, Premium Gold Black Angus beef, and recyclable containers and silverware. The meats are all hormone- and steroid-free, so you won't have to worry about your taco tasting like Mark McGwire, and all the seafood comes from sustainable American waters. A full list of Changos' eco-friendly credentials can be found on the website.

Along with all this sustainable sustainability and all-natural naturality, Changos' modest prices save you another form of verde. Order your tacos like Paul Revere and get one if by land (tacos del pueblo with chicken, beef, guacamole, or mushroom, $2.25) and two if by sea (tacos del mar with mahi mahi or shrimp served battered and fried with baja cabbage salsa, $3.25). If you have an hambre that just won't quit, sate it with the super burrito with rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream ($5.95). Refresh your palate between these tortilla-ed treats with a low-viscosity fluid from the beverage selection, which includes agua fresca ($1.75 for a regular), beer ($2.95 domestic, $3.50 import), and fresh fruit smoothies with mango, strawberry, or raspberry ($3.25).

Reviews

The Austin Chronicle has been eating at Changos Taqueria for years, and its readers named Changos #20 on its 2009 Favorite Austin Restaurants list:

  • Greg Koury and Ahmad Modoni of Manuel's fame opened Changos in 1998 with a really simple plan: Offer authentic, inexpensive, over-the-counter tacos made from the freshest ingredients in a casual but modern space. Ten years down the road, the judgment is that the boys have succeeded. – Mick Vann, Austin Chronicle

Citysearchers give Changos Taqueria 4.5 stars, 86% of Urbanspooners like it, and Yelpers give it three stars:

  • I just tried two new taco places that opened in town recently that are known for their fish tacos, and they simply don't compare. Changos is the best! Great aguas frescas too. I probably eat here on an average of 4 times a week. They need to open more! – swma, Citysearch
  • I appreciate the simplicity of the ingredients which are not overwhelming like other burrito/taco places. Fresh beans, rice, meat, mellow sauce and veggies make it a pleasing and refreshing experience. – Tara H., Yelp
