In a Nutshell

Donation provides an interactive outdoor experience for a child who may not have many opportunities to observe the natural world

The Fine Print

The Issue: Children Without Access to the Natural World

Members of both urban and rural low-income communities across the country have limited access to the outdoors, depriving them of valuable life experiences amid ecosystems brimming with diverse flora and fauna. Exploring the outside world imbues children with a sense of self, an eagerness for exercise, and an appreciation of nature. Due to safety concerns and the remoteness of greenery, underserved families often go without the benefits of the great outdoors, instead spending their time engaging in sedentary activities such as watching television and playing video games.

The Campaign: Providing Outdoor Experiences for Youth

For every $10 raised by this Grassroots campaign, Chesapeake Bay Trust can provide an educational outdoor experience for one child. The child will get a chance to trade the marble and concrete of the city for a hands-on exploration of the natural world through activities such as wading into a waterway or observing wildlife habitats. The Chesapeake Bay Trust coordinates these adventures for more than 60,000 deserving students every year. Each additional $10 raised will provide an outdoor experience for another child.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is dedicated to the welfare of the Chesapeake and its tributaries. Its grant programs, community initiatives, and restoration projects aim to tackle the problems that threaten the natural environment. On any given day, the trust could be sponsoring a cleanup project of local rivers, the planting of trees to revitalize neighborhoods, or the education of schoolchildren about storm drains and the environment. In 2011, more than 40,200 people volunteered to clean up the bay and local rivers, and trust grants helped remove 580 tons of trash from the waterways. By involving volunteer citizens in the cleanup process, the trust simultaneously raises awareness about the necessity to protect the local environment, and produces more significant results with its cleanup efforts. The organization’s mission and record of accountability have been recognized with nine consecutive years of four-star ratings from Charity Navigator, which places it in the top 1% of charities across the country.
