Chicago Botanic Garden
Originally opened atop more than 300 undeveloped acres of flooded, marshy lowlands in 1972, the Chicago Botanic Garden has grown into an internationally recognized living museum that extols the values of horticultural education and conservation. The 26 gardens, four natural areas, and nine islands brim with approximately 2.5 million plants, including various perennials, bulbs, and novelty squirting flowers. Each area showcases a specialized selection of picturesque flora that can include anything from native prairie plants to japanese bonsai trees. In addition to leisurely strolls through the gardens, visitors may also hop on a tram that ferries them on 35-minute guided tours of the grounds.
Apart from presenting visitors with a representative swath of the plant kingdom, Chicago Botanic Garden also strives to protect that kingdom for future generations. The research laboratories work to build seed banks while studying ways to combat the ravages of extinction, pollution, and climate change around the world.
