$125 for NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation ($225 Value)

During the NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation—which stands for Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training—instructors lead at least three hours of training. Sessions begin at Chicago Firearms Training's offices in the city, where a classroom session covers beginner-level topics such as the parts of a handgun, safe handling, and cleaning and storage. Groups then drive to a shooting range in Park Ridge to learn marksmanship principles under supervised live-fire instruction. Tuition includes range fees and ammo, plus the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, the NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, a Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and a certificate of completion. The schedule typically slates classes on select Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and select Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Chicago Firearm Training

At Chicago Firearm Training, chief instructors John Frycek and Jamie Tallerico combine their NRA training certifications with field experience as private investigators and personal-security specialists. The two assemble their instructional team from experienced law-enforcement officers, who receive ongoing training so they can pass on the most current armed defensive tactics to students. In addition to keeping their team's skills sharp, John and Jamie assign two or three instructors to each class. Coupled with enrollment limits, this approach helps ensure instructors can give individual attention and greet each student in their class by humming them a personalized theme song.
